Heard a rumor that desperate desert dwellers were buying up cars from rustnewyorker by the handful.Apparently southwest has either crushed, sold or exported their automotive heritage. If true this would be a disaster of colossal proportions!

Blame the do-gooders if it's true...

Here in Australia there has been a heritage for many years of farmers keeping their old stuff 'just in case something on it comes in handy'... always there was a pile of cars, machinery and other junk in one corner of the farm.

But the do-gooders want everything clean. *** and span! No rubbish, 'if you haven't used it in six months you'll never use it!' being their attitude.

And when farms come up for sale, the pressure's on too. Big holes dug to bury cars from the twenties, thirties, forties, old tractors etc. Or if there's enough (and the scrap metal price is high enough) in comes the crusher. With some room for truckloads to be carted out in between, of course.

The result is desolation. Nothing left for us enthusiasts. The car we were going back to buy (or get the engine from or whatever...) was crushed two months ago, buried last year, carted away when the property was sold.

If that's happening out in the vast expanses of the Australian bush, just imagine what's happening in the cities!

Sorry if you think this is off topic...

Wow! Real gold alright. And just to think it all started with a 1961 Dodge that was a little seedy that you bought for a song and dance.

Ray, I don't know what to say about your do-gooders Down Under but I would have thought there would have been plenty of room in Oz for the odd banger seein' as how you don't have many people living there. But the Green Party never rests it seems.

Well, it's not so impossible if you're chasing something the masses bought in large numbers... you can find them...

But we're looking for bits for the Phoenix. This model sold maybe 800 a year between 1960 and 1972, but they suffered greatly with ever-rising fuel prices (our price per litre isn't much behind your price per gallon) and so depreciated badly.

So they fell into the hands of those who didn't pay much... or, usually, care much. You can guess the rest.

When I see stuff like this, it makes me wonder:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=45581...

Note the car's location and the winning buyer's eBay I.D. But as mentioned above, there are still "native" cars to be had in the Southwestern United States.

I can answer that one, the buyer does high end restorations (and very nice work). Even with the transportation involved he'll more than recoupe his money in the parts abd accessories that will be salvaged.

There was a guy named "Bo" (I believe) in Arizona who turned out beautiful Forward Look era Mopar restorations. He sold me some glass for one of my '59 Impalas about ten years ago. Super nice guy and he knew his stuff. Is he the person you are referring to, Mike?

Hi John, just finishing up what I need to get done on the Plymouth so it can go into the body shop on thursday. As far as the front brake stuff, Pete might have something kicking around, but all my original brake stuff ended up going with the 57 rag top that went to Phoenix.

Hey Kenny--the guy you referred to (Bo) is Bo Malefors and he is the guy who found and restored my '59 Dodge Custom Royal Convertible. This was back in 1995 and it took 5 years to complete the restoration. Bo is a good guy and quite an artist--my Dodge came out of Indiana and was in really rough shape when Bo got it. With a lot of Arizoma sheetmetal transplanting and just plain a lot of work, it turned out to be a real showpiece. I know that Bo buys cars from all over the country as well as local Arizona examples, the point being that the selection of desireable FL cars is such that examples from anywhere and in any condition are being snatched up.

I know Bo, the last time I talked to him he said he was moving to Germany because of his wife's work. He comes and goes to the States quite often.
Funny thing is he even ships volvo's to Sweden (his home country) to be parted out there

I can DEFINITELY attest to the quality of Bo's work - as a sort of bystander. I used to work detail at his shop when it was on Grant in South Phoenix in the early 1990's. Also a darn cool guy and the coolest Swedish guy I've ever met.

When I worked there, he only had 2 other regulars on the staff - Peter Isaccson (sp?) and David (? brown haired guy who got homesick and left after a short period there). Hardly are there any places where folks are as dedicated to their work. To say that Bo and his crew are FL specialists is an understatement.

Anything FL related, the man was/is so connected he could have it yesterday. Fender script? No problem. Headlight bezels? Cinch. Engines? Okey doke, especially if you needed a 392 Hemi, of which he had a rotating stock of 3 at all times while I was there. Shoot, even Bo's driver at the time was a turquoise '58 New Yorker 2dr hardtop.
