Hi guys, I have a 270 hemi in need of valve seals. I ordered umbrella seals as directed by my supplier, but when we went to install them we found two things: 1. the umbrella type were too large to fit the inner valve spring. 2.The remnant left on the valve stem is an oring type. I have been unable to find any indication from parts stores that they are even available, even though they are shown in my shop manual. Will any valve stem oring 3/8 diameter work? Is there another solution that I am over looking? If anyone has info it would be appreciated. Thanks-Garry

Hi Garry, I machined the tops of the valve guides to accept positive teflon seals.
I think GM used 3/8 o'rings on their truck 350s.
Hope tis helps
Steve

I don't know about a 270 hemi but a 392 for the 300C & D does not take seals on either intake or exhaust. These engines have inner springs and the seals interfere with the springs and you can pop a valve if the spring hangs up in the seal. I have built numerous 392's for the 300C's and they DO NOT smoke from lack of these seals.

No hemi had ex seals, as far as I've heard all had int seals. All hemis had dual springs. The 300 heads are the same as any other 392 head and the only difference in the head assembly is the adj rocker arms. Wayfarer has said he's built quite a few hemis w/o any seals so that apparently will work if the clearances are good.

Hi George-just noticed your reply. Gary (Wayfarer) messaged me & gave me a lot of information Re: valve seals & hemi's as well . You are right though even though the old valve seals are non existent the engine does not smoke when driving, even when backing off. It does offer a bit on start up. The car is put away for the winter so nothing exciting now until spring. Hope you have a Happy Thanksgiving - Thanks for the reply- Garry McGaw
