Expert Posts: 2098 Location: Idaho - where men are men and spuds are spuds | My 1960 Desoto Fireflite currently has 15" steel wheels with 3.75 backspacing. The 15" wheels were used to facilitate front disc brake conversion which combines '76 Dodge Dart and '76 Chevy Monte Carlo parts from AAJ Brakes. I'm wanting to buy Wheel Vintique 76 Series Chrysler wire wheels for it, which have 3.625 backspacing - 1/8" difference. Neither Wheel Vintiques or my local tire shop can tell me whether the wires are likely to have sufficient clearance. I don't want to order them until I know for sure they will fit. I've seen many Dodges, Desotos, Chryslers with these wheels and disc brakes. What say you?

The new wheel pushes the tire further outward, but there is typically plenty of space out there before your tire will hit your fender. I am running 255x60x15 tires on 8" rims with 4.5" backspace on the front of my '58 Dodge without clearance issues.

Hmmmmm, I was thinking that 1/8" less would bring the wheel/tire inwards. Nope, going from 3.75" backspacing to 3.625" backspacing will push the wheels further out - assuming the wheel width is the same. Backspacing is the measurement from wheel mounting flange to the outside edge of the rim ----->on the backside. If this distance is 1/8" less, then a wheel of the same width will effectively be positioned 1/8" further outboard. But keep in mind that the amount a given wheel protrudes outward from the wheel mounting flange is "overall wheel width minus backspacing." And if that's not confusing enough, wheel width and overall wheel width are not the same. I think this graphic will help explain. And to give you a direct answer to your question, I am 99% sure the aftermarket wire wheels work fine with AAJ brakes. Mine did. I wasn't so much worried about fender clearance as I was about clearing the disc brake assembly. Thanks. And yes, unfortunately I have to admit carjock is my brother. He's completely out of the "car" hobby now, and has switched to guitars. I don't know how many he has, but I know he has become quite accomplished at buying guitars for little or nothing, refurbishing them and then selling the ones he doesn't want to keep. This is good, because when he was doing cars, he would buy high and sell low. :)

Here is a real world example of that. 56 Dodge D500 (and 56 Fury)(aka 56 Chrysler Windsor) wheels. Nominal 5 1/2" width. That is bead to bead. Overall width is 6 1/2".
