Expert 5K+ Posts: 9604 Location: So. Cal | I purchased another project car recently in Eastern Washington, from barnescoredrilling. It appears to be an original 361 Golden Commando car. Does anyone know how to tell if it's correct from the body tag? The car was made in Los Angeles, so it may be more difficult without the IBM card. The original owner, Mel Meeks, is listed on the dash plaque. It's missing a number of parts including the air cleaner, left front fender trim, seat buckles, front bumper & grille, but at least the body seems to have minimal rust on it. I won't begin working on it for a while, except to gather up all the missing parts for it and put it back together. If anyone has any leads on these parts, let me know - especially the air cleaner & seat buckles. I don't yet have it in my possession, but it is supposed to be delivered here on Monday. Expert 5K+ Posts: 9604 Location: So. Cal | The car arrived today. It's always nice when you actually get it home, despite the inevitable disappointments. There are a couple of disappointments like the cracked windshield, heavily dented & lead repaired fender, dents in the quarters, non-working latches, rust under the rocker trim etc, but overall, it's not bad and I really can't complain. Expert 5K+ Posts: 9604 Location: So. Cal | There were some nice surprises in the trunk. It turns out that ALL of the left fender trim is included there! Although the lower trim is heavily dented and will take quite a bit of work to fix. Nevertheless, this is great news to me. Other goodies include a set of "Plymouth" emblems, the horn bar & mount, 1 seat buckle (so I am only missing 3 now), grille trim connector, a heavily dented grille trim, what appears to be a full set of spare windows, and the transmission, mount & torque converter! Expert 5K+ Posts: 9604 Location: So. Cal | I'm posting a better picture of the body tag, as I couldn't read all of it from the old picture. It reads: M2:1, M5:1 SCHED: 0424, NO. 3036, MODEL: MP2P, BT:292, PT: XV (Iceberg White, Bronze Poly), TR: 338 The motor stamping does seem to match what a true 395 Golden Commando should have based on a late April build, so that's a really good sign that the car probably is a legitimate Golden Commando. It is: ML361 62509 Maltese Cross (probably .001" oversize bearings) The motor appears to be seized (no surprise) as is the power steering pump, so those will need to be gone through. Expert 5K+ Posts: 9604 Location: So. Cal | Thanks Igor, I didn't realize that tag was the same one until you pointed it out. I removed the transmission out of the trunk and realized that the mat in there is an original. It's in great shape too, still soft and pliable with only a couple of small tears in it. Pretty cool. The previous owner told me he thinks the windows are from a '60-'62 Chrysler 4dr. Anyone need them? I don't, but I may be able to use the frames to re-create some rusted versions. Expert 5K+ Posts: 9604 Location: So. Cal | I received some trim parts from W. Weiland for the car. Thanks! I also contacted Benny Buckner and received 4 new buckles for the front seats. I would normally just replace the rears too, so they are all the same, but I am on a more strict budget so I just ordered four of them. They're really nicely made out of machined stainless with welded loops on the backs. They seem to be very strong and durable so I am really happy with them. Some of the edges are a little sharp so a little smoothing is in order, but other than that, they are about perfect. Expert 5K+ Posts: 9604 Location: So. Cal | A big thank you to John Fowlie for selling me all the missing parts for the front of this car, as well as a nice horn ring. Having a good horn ring makes the dash look much better. I will need to repair some damage to the left front frame before I can mount the new parts onto the car. Expert 5K+ Posts: 9604 Location: So. Cal | I picked up this NOS Golden Commando emblem, used on the '60 Plymouth. It's a lot bigger than I expected it to be. I included a nickel to give a reference for the size. I have a 60 GC but thought it looks better on the trunk lid, replacing the Plymouth script. Had to fabricate a little stainless filler to make it fit. Expert 5K+ Posts: 9604 Location: So. Cal | Nice job on the insert there. This one could probably go on the right side of the trunk lid on my '59 as well, with a little insert under it. Though, I don't think the '59 lid is as curved as the '60. Were there differences in paint scheme for this emblem between 1960 and 1961? Which version would have had the blue/white/black on it? Also, I remember reading that the '60 Plymouth only used one of these on the driver's fender, not two on both fenders. Is that not correct? I bought it off Ebay. I was going to point out 2 new sonoramic emblems on there too, but they both just sold before I typed this up. https://www.ebay.com/itm/393583589310 Edited by Powerflite 2021-09-23 4:34 PM

Both the 60 and the 61 used 100% identical emblems, with the same paint sheme (mine is not painted correctly). I also have a 61 GC coupe with the OE emblem and saw many GCs from 60 and 61. No, the 60s had 2 emblems, one on each front fender. They are my favorite cars but they are not exactly a clean design. The sides look pretty busy and the emblems really don't help, Imo. Expert 5K+ Posts: 9604 Location: So. Cal | I agree. I really like the bronze/copper color too. I was able to find a replacement air cleaner for the car for a reasonable price. People were wanting stupid money for them, that I refused to pay, but this one eventually came up for sale. I don't have the right filter element for it yet, but I won't need it for quite a while. Expert 5K+ Posts: 9604 Location: So. Cal | This motor is stuck tight, so at a minimum, it's going to require removing the heads to free it up, or else a full rebuild. In anticipation for that, I decided not to rebuild the heads, but to replace them with a set of aluminum stealth heads. They arrived today and look really good. The valves are huge at 2.14" intake and 1.81" exhaust. I'm going to need to couple these with free-flowing exhaust to take advantage of that on a relatively small 361 displacement engine. Or I may just stroke it with a 413 crank. Edited by Powerflite 2023-06-18 8:28 PM (Stealth Heads.jpg) Attachments ---------------- Stealth Heads.jpg (143KB - 58 downloads)
