Her journey continues here, at Ultra One Corporation. Here, Miss Belvedere will be dipped in the worlds BEST rust remover product, Safest Rust Remover. Why was Safest Rust Remover chosen for the job? There is no other product in the world that can remove rust delicately, without destroying any of the fragile parts such as seals, gaskets, and original paint and decals. The goal is to restore Miss Belvedere to the most orignal state possible and no other product can achieve this

Miss Belvie is a mystery to me. Is it possible that she isn't as bad as she looks? If all the crud were removed from the surfaces, what WOULD she look like? Those staligmites-stalactites? hanging down from the undersides- could they be lime deposits from the water? Look at what the front bumper looked like from just wiping off one spot. But the rear springs rusted till they broke. OK then how come the body didn't have gaping holes in it? Why weren't the floors completly gone? Why didn't the gas tank straps let loose? The sheet metal is a lot thinner. Maybe spring steel can't stand up to water when there is constant weight bearing down on them? Then why didn't the torsion bars also break?
If this miricle company does succseed in cleaning her up, are we going to believe it's the same car????Conspiracy theory # 101 ! ..............................MO

...Indeed....this is just wrong...!
Has anybody seen the Tulsa DVD footage (from Fearless leader Dave and Juley)?
When they lift the trunklid, the frame of the trunklid is completely disintegrating; with large sections not only rusty....but gone completely.
You want a shiny 57 Plymouth go buy a restored one, and leave the Tulsa Plymouth ALONE. It's the only one.
Glenn.

Steve, my thoughts RE: the rear leaf spring breakage- with the water level in the vault continually rising and falling, there were times that there was probably a considerable added weight on the suspension due to any water left in the 'protective bag' and the car body. Over time, from all this loading and unloading on the springs, metal fatigue set in. These leaf springs were not the most durable to start with- I've gotten many cars in the yard that were parked due to broken main leaves. ---John

John,
90% or better of the forwardlook cars that I drag in here that have set in any type of dampness longer than 5 years all have broken and crumbling springs.. Somewhere around here I have pieces of one that rusted completly thru.. It must have been something in the composite of the steel in this era? I have drug in 1940's-mid 50's mopars that sat right along side the Fl's but for decades longer and their springs were fine.

Clean the Interior, Do you mean Polish the Seat Springs, As that is about all that will be Left..

As for the Engine , Maybe if they Fill the Engine with ULTRA and the Drain it after a couple days, That Baby may Fire Straight Up. No need for a Rebuild..

Someone had posted, somewhere, that the reason that the leaf springs broke-away was DUE to their being composed
of high-carbon-content spring-steel, which actually reacts (rusts) badly to prolonged oxidation.

Ms. Belvie's leaf springs are not the first examples which have been found to have rusted/broken -away.

And, just like the "Bonnie & Clyde Death Car", or the 1907 Thomas Flyer "Around the World Race" winning car, etcetcetc....
a non-restored artifact is INFINITELY more interesting and informative, than some-old re-creation of a car.

Something left to the imagination (like old-school strippers, or ANY state lottery--lololol) is BETTER, than the reality of the situation
[look at all those UN-happy lottery winners, out there; poor babies!]....

You want to see what Ms. Belvie looks like, under her patina? Go to any wrecking yard, and look-around you.

neil, i have a funny little story to tell you, and it's TRUE!!

my grandma's first cousin got a divorce back in the 30's. i don't know why she got it, but she got it and the three kids. she also happened to be a schoolteacher, which must have run in the family at that time.

anyway, she moved herself and her children from rural mississippi to tulsa. however, she had a really bad experience....... clyde barrow STOLE HER CAR!!

well, being an educated woman and a single mother of three, she decided not to just sit back and take this. she wrote a letter to pretty boy floyd, who had many family members living in the area of sallisaw, oklahoma. she described her unfortunate circumstances to him, and asked him if he could please help GET HER CAR BACK.

.....and he DID.....

i'm not aware of it having any bullet holes or any other lurid, interesting details, but i always thought that it was pretty cool that she actually got her car back and got to use it. her name? sally. her surname? hidden to protect the innocent. however, both my grandma and my cousin (her daughter) confirmed the truth of this story to me. i always thought it was pretty cool how an outlaw would prevail upon another to give an ordinary person a break.

maybe miss belvedere will get a good break, too!

A coincidental part of our Tulsa trip, The J.M. Davis Arms & Historical Museum in Claremore. The cut out of Bonnie Parker is leaning on her Colt .45; left behind when they bugged out of a hotel on short notice. Pretty Boy Floyd at right; one of the shotguns near him was tossed out of his gang's car during a police chase. - Rob

A positive prognosis

KELLY KERR / Tulsa World
Robert Carney (left) and Dwight Foster look inside the 1957 Belvedere that was unearthed from the Tulsa County Courthouse lawn this summer. Carney is a member of the Maryland family that won the car and Foster is a New Jersey businessman whose company will try to preserve the car.

By RANDY KREHBIEL World Staff Writer
11/2/2007

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Complete coverage of Tulsa’s famous buried car, including a story archive, slide shows and videos.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Unearthed car's owners have plans to preserve it

Dwight Foster isn't ****eyed but he is an optimist.

Looking over the crusty remains of the 1957 Plymouth Belvedere lifted in June from a 50-year-old time capsule, the New Jersey industrialist said, "It's actually not as bad as I thought it might be."

That came as a surprise to many of those familiar with the Belvedere. Many and maybe most of its years under ground were also spent under water, and the car was much the worse for it.

But Foster and Robert Carney, a member of the Maryland family officially declared winner of the Belvedere on Thursday, have big plans for the car.

"I want to treat this car like an artifact from the Titanic," Foster said, "clean it up and scrape the barnacles off it, so to speak. I feel like there's a better than 75 percent chance we can get the engine to run."

That doesn't mean Foster and Carney intend to make the car driveable.

"We want to preserve the car, not restore it," Foster said. "We're not going to replace any more pieces than we have to get it 'up on its haunches.' "

By that, Foster said, he means setting on all four tires at an even keel. As is, the Belvedere sags badly in the back because it's rear leaf springs rusted through. Surprisingly, though, its four tires remained inflated on Thursday several months after being aired up for the first time in half a century.

Plans now call for Carney, his aunt Catherine Humbertson Johnson, 93, and mother Levada Humbertson Carney, 88, to return to Tulsa on Nov. 29 for a sort of bon voyage party for the Belvedere.

The car will be trucked to Foster's company, Ultra One Corp., in Hackettstown, N.J., for treatments with a degreaser and an acid-free rust remover made by Ultra One.

Foster knows some people want the car to be left untouched but said that's not practical.

"If nothing is done, it will be dust in two years," he said.

The intention, Carney and Foster said, is to bring the Belvedere back to Tulsa next year for a second unveiling. Enthusiasts will be able to follow the car's progress on Foster's Web site at http://www.missbelvedere.com/

Foster said portions of the car will be revealed on the Web site, but "no one will see the entire car until we bring it back here."

Foster said he is a "car person" who became interested in the Belvedere several years ago. When he saw the condition it was in, he recognized it as a chance to give his company "five minutes of fame."

Robert Carney's aunt, Catherine Johnson, and mother, Levada Carney, were declared rightful claimants to the car on Thursday. The two women are the sisters of Raymond Humbertson, whose entry in a 1957 contest to guess Tulsa's 2007 population came closest to the actual number.

Humbertson died in 1979 and his wife died in 1988. The couple had no children.

Foster and Carney hope to build a customized trailer for transporting the Belvedere to car shows around the U.S. and perhaps overseas. Both said Tulsa would always have first call for it.

"It is Tulsa's car, and it will always be Tulsa's car," Foster said.
............................................................................................................................

So looks like a Re-union may have to be June 2008 , Or is everyone Still set on going to the Car where ever it is in June 2009....

Yeah Ron: the "empty-threat"/Big-Lie STILL works, nowadays.

Does THIS sound familiar: "We had to DESTROY the car (villiage) in order to save it".

He won't need a special trailer to display it,,,,,, several 5 gallon buckets ought to work just fine!

He should have taken the $300G's (if that rumor was true) he could have retired!
After the dip, he will get $75.00 for scrap and a big bill for clogged drains!

The Codpiece really had no choice, in his statement, to the public; he knew that he was in a hostile environment, and saying
to leave-her-alone was a little bit of "sour grapes", as if he were saying :"If we can't fix-er-up, ain't nobody should do it" , either.

He didn't really make a strong-enough statement that the car should be preserved, as a unique, historical artifact (pretty hard
for any hot-rodder to make THAT statement, though!)

Now wait a minute Neil!  I represent that remark! LOL  As a definate rodder, I don't happen to believe every car should be modified, just every type of car!  LOL  In fact, I believe this car should be preserved as a historical artifact!  The circumstances surrounding this car make it a part of our automobile history.  Now, the owners can do whatever they want with their car, but I personally believe at least some group or museum or whatever should take this car and preserve it (with the memoriabilia that was inside) as it is with the full story of how it came to be.  Now thats cool!

That's the POINT, James!!!!

Since the Codpiece IS incapable of doing anything to the car, he declares that it SHOULD be left intact, as nobody ELSE could
do the job, properly (and the Boydster, therefore, saves-face, on NOT being shown-up, by anyone)---huh????

The funniest thing/comment, regarding the car's future, is the statement that :" ..it will turn to DUST, if nothing else is done to it
to preserve"it .....

For sure Boyd and his band of monkeys would only want to drop a small block chubby in it and bondo the crap out of it. I also love street rods and real rods but nothing boyd wishes he could build is a real rod or even a hot rod. And yes I have built and repaired real rods and customs, as well as muscle cars. This is my outlook on the restoration of Miss Belvedere. She should be placed back where she was originally buried and left be. We all should be proud of the fact that of all the cars that there were already out on the market it was a 1957 Plymouth that was chosen to be that one car to be remembered in her own special never done before way. That's just me though.

You make a good point, but there would have to be a sump pump installed this time :o)

I'm a newbie, an enthuiast of old American cars especially Mopars. I have been watching the unburial of the '57 Plymouth. Too bad water got in. I have seen the up-close photos of the car. Man all of the sheet metal appears to be so badly rusted, that in some areas that are more reddish or brown colored, one can easily poke his/her finger through. In those reddish/brown areas there are even a few holes appearing. Not to mention a crack behind the rear bumper near the tailfin on the right side. There's also a crack in the floorpan near the right side torsion bar. The trim and bumpers are in good shape. Some of the underbody components such as the frame, upper and lower control arms, driveshaft and rear differental may still be ok but it's hard to tell because of all the gunk. Of course all of you know the rear leaf springs are rusted through LOL. It scares me to think what would happen when they try to derust it... :-\

It's probably aired-out, by now (but turning-to-DUST, according to Ultra-F-Up's blog--LOLOLOL).

As long as the car is kept DRY, it ain't gonna deteriorate any further!

LOL well my biggest concern is not that the car would disappear if it was subject to rust removal. There has to be some metal left. They were able to open the hood intact, if it was completely rusted through it would have broken if they tried to open it. My biggest concern is that, they claim they would not restore it but clean it up. I can clearly see the car would look like swiss cheese after it was cleaned up, with the remaining sheet metal being thinner than factory specs because of the pitting. I wouldn't want to see a swiss chesse car shown at Tulsa. Guess they wouldn't have a choice but to restore the car with most of the parts replaced, and it wouldn't exactly be the same thing.

Oh by the way is that smell typical of rust?

No, dave, "seriously", if you read all the threads, you'll see where the car was claimed to be "rusting-away/turning to dust"
if it were not to be 'cleaned/de-rusted/restored' by Ultra-Fraud.

Ultra-Boyd apparently threw some money at the new owners, who saw some easy money/promotional possibilities involving
a cleaned-up hulk, so, here we are awaiting the results of a complete F-ing up of the car; as I've/others have written:
if 'we' wanted to see a nasty car-hulk, we could go visit any big-national (or even local-back-yard).

The reason that the Bonnie & Clyde death car, and the 1907 Thomas Flyer (at museum-diorama, in Reno) Around the World
Race winning car are so interesting, is due to their UNRESTORED/original condition.

Neil, yep I have read lots of the posts here during the past few months as well as keeping up to date on the forum page of missbelvedere.com and I am aware of what the guy at Ultra One said about the car going to dust. Pretty scary and the car definitely got worse since it was unveiled in Tulsa. The missbelvedere.com forum has the latest about the car being placed on a flathead for the trek to New Jersey. You can see the latest pics of the car, it does look worse (they couldn't put it in a trailer!). Check it out. I basically just wondered if there must be at least some sheet metal not yet rusted though because the hood didn't break when they opened it. However the bracing sheet metal beneath the trunk door was so rusted though they fell right off the trunk door when they opened it! Creepy man!

She's definitely starting to flake - and there's now a gaping crack on the back panel above the rear bumper, just this side of the tail light.

That "flaking" off may be the cosmoline that had been applied to the car, coming-off.

Looking at the wiped-off bumper (shiney underneath the coating on it--that wasn't rust) and other places where that brownish-film isn't thick (like, around the tail lights) I'm thinking that the painted sheetmetal might become revealed, after it's Ultra-F'ed-up.

Removing that cruddy patina won't do the car any favors; they'd have to hose-off the interior, too, if they're gonna wash-down the exterior & engine compartment, and undercarriage, so, all those beautiful colors and textures inside and outside it, will be gone and it will look like any other forsaken back yard wonder.

Looked like that to me. It was easy to miss, though.
Just a quick photo montage... clip-after-clip-after-clip there at the end.

Why bother to fix her up - there's a lot of them around and in better shape, why don't they just preserve it like it was found - there for sure only one of those?!?

Duh..This one. Forgot to put the link up. Isn't it strange that Manning knows what I was talking about even though I didn't? All in fun Mr. Nathan.
