I was here last weekend - The story was the seller is the landlord, and the renter stopped paying rent.

Most cars were way beyond saving. A '63 ('64?) Mercury was up on blocks but bent in two, and a Wide Track Pontiac convertible was in two pieces.

I went there to look at the '58 Dodge Sierra wagon for $500. It was a disaster - the hood wouldn't open, but the roof could likely be peeled back like a lid on a sardine can, due to the rust. There was a '59 Dodge 2-door hardtop (small rear window) that was in similar shape for $950 with no motor or transmission - it was one of the few cars that sold - I asked, and they claimed it went for $750. The roof was pushed in, rusted away at its perimeter, and at the dents, it was rusted through, just like the '58 Dodge wagon.

Few cars sold. Prices were very high considering the condition of each car. I would guess that most will be crushed.

I included lots of the other non-Forwardlook cars in case anyone was interested in seeing how well they rust, too.
The 1960 Mercury - Big M??

------------------------

I sent an email to the seller - his email address & response:

John,
The cars are being sold 'first come, first served'. The week for removal is just a guide line ... we are a little flexible on the removal. There is a tow truck company just down the street and the owner is going to be there with his trucks on Saturday to assist in removal and loading.
If you have any other questions let me know.

Looks like the result of salty rainwater from sea. Rainwater runs down the edges of the hoods or driprails, evaporates there and the saltresidue remains and eats the metal.

Adriana - it is often the fate of cars left out here in coastal south Florida to become a rusted hulk.
I would guess that these cars have been left outside for at least 15-20 years.
During the 4-5 months of summer weather, the combination of rains, high humidity (near 90%), high heat (32C - 35C daily) and salt air, combine to destroy unprotected steel.

Yes, that Sierra was a 9-seater. I thought only its set of four wheel covers were worth saving, but their interest was getting rid of entire cars only. Even though the seller, a woman in her 50s, dropped the price from $500 to $350, there were not enough parts on it to be worthwhile for me to bring it home. The yard was a five hundred mile roundtrip drive from my house to begin with, which means at 11 MPG for my tow vehicle, even at the fuel prices we pay here in the US, it would have been $140 just to get the car home. That $140 would be insignificant if the car was worth it!

Even that decent-looking '65 Lincoln four-door convertible had fist-sized rust holes in its rear deck. And to give you an idea of the outrageous prices, the seller wanted $12,000 for that Lincoln! Never mind she wanted $2500 for the sad, sad Amphicar. There was essentially no sheet metal left on that car for its lower areas - the bottom 15cm of the driver's door was air!!

Gotta agree with you, Chuck.

Another car that is a long ways from its origin is the '60 Monarch [Canadian Mercury] a rare sight even in it's native country!

It would be neat, but needed a BOATLOAD of work.

And it's only good for 70MPH on the road and 7MPH in the water.

I'd rather put my effort into a Forwardlook car. So I am!

I really like Amphicars, but his one would be very difficult task to bring back, Maybe good for parts. Definitely I hope it does not get crushed. Too far for me to ship back to Colo.

I live about 5 miles from this place. I knew the owner who passed away about 4 years ago. He was very rich and very eccentric. I didn't even know he had half the cars in the photos. He had 216 cars when he died. He had a huge warehouse across town with at least 40 cars inside. Most were sold without titles. Most all of his cars were just left to rot away. I did manage to buy a Corvair Rampside PU from him only because he couldn't get it running. The lady (?) handling the estate is a real B*&^#, wouldn't give even the local car clubs first shot at his stuff. I remember when he drove the Pontiac in, it was mint. Good luck on getting anything from her.

Update. I was there after John was, and I did buy the '58 wagon. Indeed very rusty, but it actually rolled without pulling the drums! I did sell the L-350 and transmission, along with alot of small parts. Easy one to strip, basically pulled the doors and interior out with my hands! Still have the rear half of the car to go. John, I got the tank and stone guards for you. This lady that is liquidating this stuff was actually pretty nice to me, and she even yanked the old wagon out of the yard to the road where we could load up, with her 4 wheel drive! From Johns pics, the cars that were gone when I was there are: Amphicar, Lincoln sedan, 59 Dodge, the Olds next to the wagon, and that's about it. The lady said she had no plans to crush the cars. They are very high on the prices. I ended up paying $400 for the wagon. I would'nt have even bothered if it did'nt have the engine/tranny in it. Parts on this one are very rough, save for the caps and stainless. I've been thinking about bagging that '60 Monarch. Don't even know if there's a market for parts for one of those however. I'd hate to be the only guy in the world stuck with a bunch of Monarch parts......that is unless someone really needed them! I'll try to post some progress of parting the '58 wagon out.

That back bumper fits most of the 57-59 wagons and the sweptline pickups looks nice in the picture and should be worth something.

Yep, I recall the '59 Dodge had already been sold before I got there - the seller had marked "SOLD" with white liquid shoe polish on the windshields of 3-4 cars that hadn't yet been picked up by their new owners.

That's not surprising. It probably had a few useable parts on it, but that's all.
