Went to Baughmans in York PA today along with Sidesho Bob and Matt. It was a pretty nice visit to an old yard on a near perfect Pennsylvania fall day.

It is definitely a cool yard if you like seeing cars of the FL era. Apparently this yard was closed in the early 1970s and remained closed until recently, so it really is a time capsule of sorts, with the vast amount of cars being from the '50s and '60s. Also, because the yard was closed for so long, at least some of the cars are very intact and not overly picked over.

Of course, with this being the northeast, most of the cars are very very rusty, so body parts and interiors are a mess. Still I managed to come home with a handful of nice parts fpr my '61 Newport.

I took some pics that will give you a good idea of what forward look cars are there:

I think this one is my favorite pic of the day. I mean sure, lots of guys have bumper wings on their '58 Plymouths, but how many of you have a bumper TREE?

I take it,,,, those were the only 2 '61 Dodges in the whole place? No guard or shields?

THANKS for looking though.

Pic 122. Was the '49-'50 Merc in the background a 2 or 4-door? Surprised some on hadn't drug it out back then. Old '70's, yeller, WV license plate, on the bumper to the left of the Ply.

Thanks for the kind words. To answer some questions:

alumcanTandThd - Yes, I'm pretty sure there were only those two '61 Dodges. The green one did appear pretty complete (with intact 6-cyl), but I didn't see any shields or guards.

miquelonbrad - I didnt see any '57 or '58 Chryslers

The car in pics 064, 065, and 066 does appear to be a '57 Fury. But all the unique Fury stuff is gone. Even the VIN tag.

I understand that the owner will have the yard open again this Saturday to coincide with Hershey, so if anyone else wants to go, it may be a good time to do it. I might go back myself, but not sure.

I went back to Baughman's today to get a few more things that I didnt have time for last week.

The guy who was working there told me that the township is requiring them to crush out all of the cars by December. He said they might be able to get an extension until March or April, but in any case, they are in the process of crushing them all one by one. It's a shame to think they'll all be gone soon, especially since there are still tons of good parts left. Lots of good stainless, glass, instruments and other things.

So... if anyone wants any parts from these cars, I'd suggest you act soon. Also, he told me that today was the last time they'd be open on a Saturday. So if you want to go, call the main yard first and ask about the yard on 2126 Copenhaffer Rd. The number for the main yard is (717) 846-3944.

I did find a few more FL cars that I didn't see last week. Here's the pics:

Now, that's a real shame that they have to crush all of these cars..

It reminds me of the sad faith of the Limestone, Maine junk yard that crushed out more than 5000 cars, many of them restorable, in the mid-1990's.

I can almost feel all the impressions, even from here in Sweden; the rustling leaves, the rich smell of rusting metal mixed up with the raw smell of earth and rotting vegetation, inside the cars there is the lingering smell of oil and grease and sometimes even gasoline, the broken sunrays dancing over the chrome through cracked windows and the smell of rotten interior mixed with the smell of decomposing vegetation. I just love it - I could dwell for hours and days in such a place, there is a form of dead calm in those places. The graveyards of torturered twisted steel.

A BIG thanks for sharing!

Thats OK Wiz, I know what you are saying. a place like that is just like walking thru an old overgrown cemetary. Don't pay any attention to old poop-can , when he gets in a place like that- he just wants to fart so he can see if it echo's ! ......................MO

Wizard,

I don't think I could have described my feelings walking through this yard better than you did. I have always liked junkyards, but this one is unique in itself. It really does overload your senses.

Greg -

On that 59 Desoto Seville, what shape is the windshield in ? That's a W453, BTW, which fits 57-59 convertibles.

Did the Seville have swivel seats, by any chance ?

I don't believe the Desoto had swivels, I would hope I would have noticed that. Don't remember the condition of the windshield, they must make repros of these with the bubble, yes?

Well, I thought that PPG was selling them. But a recent phone call to their Vintage Glass program indicated that they weren't making them at present and had no plans to do a run. So you're left with one made in South America , which is thinner than original and may not have the correct 'bubble', or one of Timo's, which end up being aroung 1500, including shipping.

Thanks, Jeff. I'm all set in that department.

I know folks are looking for these, though. Do you have any without wiper scratches and without smokiness in the corners ?

Went up there this morning to pick up the Fury that I had bought. We'll someone decided to take the few good parts that were left from the car, even though I had already bought it. The two Fury 14x6 wheels and the complete power brake setup were removed. The yard owner was very understanding about it and gave me all of my money back, but I still lost on the flat bed and the day off from work. There is a dirty little rat of a man who works and lives there in a nasty trailer in the old car lot, and I'm quite sure he sold the parts and pocketed the money. The owner knew nothing about it, and had made the deal with me weeks ago. The rain kept us from picking it up earlier, and gave someone else a chance to screw me. Now the car and it's original Fury block are off to the crusher and I'm quitting while I'm behind. I've spent 8 hours driving back and forth and am out a few hundred bucks now... Good stuff, Thanks!
