I just picked up a 1957 Dodge sweptside that has alot of rust issues in the cab. I have located, as close as I can tell, a 55-56 cab that is almost perfect and has wide rear window. Can anyone tell me if these are the same cabs? Its model is a c3-c8-116. The interchange shows doors are different, but not sure about cab. Thanks for any help. Ken

The doors are different because the 57 Dodge cab uses a 57 Plymouth style outside door handle. I believe the late 55 through 60 cabs are all pretty much the same. I have a 56 cab and a 59 cab in my yard I will look closely at tomorrow but the Sweptside did not use a different cab as far as I know.

That would be great if you could check as the cab I am looking at is 200 miles from my truck. Makes it harder to do a side by side comparison, and they want 700 for it so don't want to buy something that won't be correct. The other thing I could think of is the eariler trucks had gull wing hood and the 57 has hood hinges on cab. Not sure if there is a difference there. Thanks again.

Hi Ken,
It sounds like you have just started a project that was my dream for many years. I'm very envious! Please keep us posted with your progress.

Yup big project. Motor is free and I know will fire up and run. Quarters are ugly but we picked up a 57 plymouth wagon years ago and has most what we need for patching them. The tailgate is the hardest for me not knowing how the latch is suppose to work and of couse finding the side chrome. If the 55 cab works will make the job alot easier.

The tailgate latch is like it was for most pickups in those days. The side trim has to come from a dodge 2 dr. station wagon (hard to find).

I had a 315 hemi with a TF trans, including the push button pod, all set up for my project until the "wheels all fell off".

Segment Eight: 1957 to 1960 Power Giant Pickups

Power Giant pickups were a continuation of the C-Series pickups. C-Series frames and wheelbases continued without change as did cabs and cargo boxes. Changes in style from year-to-year were more or less limited to the sheet metal from the cowl forward. As a matter of fact, the Dodge truck cab which was new in midyear 1955 was used through the 1975 model year on most medium and heavy duty trucks and on heavy duty trucks built for export only through the 1978 model year.

The four Power Giant years can easily be divided into two segments of two years each: 1957 to 1958 and 1959 to 1960. This division was due to the addition of the new Sweptline cargo box in 1959. The traditional narrow cargo box was continued without change. The Sweptline cargo boxes' differed in lengths as well as widths from the old box, but we will get into those details later.

There are a couple of other differences I forgot, in 56 the brake and clutch pedals come up through the floor and the later ones are suspended from under the dash. The seat attaches differently to the floor. Of course the dash is different but that is removable. Not sure if this was done in 57 but my 59 cab has it this way. The wrap around rear window is a nice option but much harder to find glass for, just paid $175 for a used one from Napa valley area.

I looked closely at my 56 and 59 cabs and noticed the following differences besides what was already mentioned: the firewall is slightly raised forward where the hood hinges bolt on, there is a doubler spot welded on to the front of the firewall in the area where the master cylinders bolt on for the swing pedals, because of this doubler, the through fitting for the wiring harness has been moved up and outward to clear, because of the use of the different style door handles, the latch is in a different position on the door jam. None of these differences are major IMHO and could be dealt with If you are trying for a perfect restoration, you could swap a portion of the upper firewall into the older cab and fill a couple of holes in the door jam area. Of course, if you used the older doors as is, only a purist would know the difference but, a restored Sweptside is worth a lot more than a standard pickup if done properly. I plan on restoring my 56 pickup "old school" with a 331 hemi and a manual trans. I should mention that my 59 is a series 500 truck and will also be restored but mostly stock with an early 318 and 4 speed truck trans. Be sure and post more pictures of your project and maybe move it to "members rides".

Call it Heresy (it is) but a 315 Hemi would be awesome in that truck.
