There are times when I reckon I have the best job in the World, then last Monday I changed my mind. Hauled in a '50 Nash bathtub, a real solid survivor with only a crumpled drivers side front wing
where the wind blew it open and snapped the restraint strap. Runs and drives perfect, good brakes as well, BUT the owner wants the shop to chop the roof and lower the suspension..
I guess I'm old fashioned really, but I try to swing along with other blokes ideas about how they like the look of their cars, but to butcher this lovely old rare car that has survived so well, then come to England to be chopped and lowered is just plain wrong in my eyes...This is a mega rare car this side of the pond..

I guess I don't get it. If I buy something, isn't it mine? Can't I do what I want with it? Am I not allowed to do horrible things as well as great things to my property? Isn't it mine?

If I am only allowed to do approved things to my property does that make you a communist country and me one of your unhappy subjects?

You do not have to like what I do and you can refuse to provide your service (if you can afford to act that way) or you can just provide your service and complain on some car site... ;-)

This really can be a sticky one

It really is the purist vs customiser/hot rodder debate.

If its his, he has the right to do what he wants, as he wears the reprocussions, but, I do agree to a point.

I like to customise/hot rod cars a bit, but I try not to do anything thats not undoable, others are braver than me.

But, who has the right to say where the line is drawn?

What I do maybe as abhorrant to some as the bas***disation of this wagon is to me (cant understand the body mods, just destroyed it).

I guess it depends on how you look at a particular car, wether its a peice of art as it sits, or its a piece of art in the rough, or its alive and has a soul and wether you are about to hurt it or make it better

My problem with customs and especially when the top is chopped, is windows fitting in the holes. If you haven't figured out a way to make all the windows seal up tight, don't cut it. Can't even begin to think of how many I've seen where they can't roll up the side windows. Another issue for me is vent window holes that aren't addressed properly, which seems to be a big problem when chopping a FL car.

As far as lowering it, not against it until something barbaric takes place like eliminating torsion bars to put in air bags. If it's a coil sprung car and you want to do bags, go for it.

I'd like to see how they plan on reworking the Nash's back window, roof line, trunk opening and lid.

My thoughts would be to use the gutter line and bring it down to about where it would meet the missing side strip

That would make the roof to small in every direction, so a lot of sectioning and adding strips of sheetmetal to bring the pillars back into line would need to happen.

The bootlid would be treated the same as the roof and the back window could remain un touched if the widening strips were done to each side of it

A car in this condition is also rare in the U.S. That being said, the owner has the "right" to do as he wants to his car. I am not a big fan of the late 40s early 50s car designs but this car has a very classic look as is, I think it would be better left as is. Does the shop have the skill to do this properly? As already mentioned if not done right it would ruin the car IMHO.

Good debate subject.

I am wondering if a bathtub Nash such as this is seen in a different light than they are in the States ...
as dumpy tubs that define the word "ugly" ?

Here in the States, a seller would have a rough go GIVING this car away, let alone finding a dedicated
enthusiast to preserve it as the unique car that it is.

I can see this both ways. Personally, I'd like to see Grandma Pittipoo driving this thing way too slow,
with one blinker perpetually on, plugging up traffic forever ! But people like Grandma Pittipoo are a dying
breed and one could probably count them on their fingers today. Which leaves the few cars like this surviving
with even fewer surviving "proper" owners, which in turn, leaves cool cars BEGGING for anyone to save them,
be that through a customization OR as preserved relics.

Truth be told, most Americans (even car guys) could not care less if they never saw a bathtub Nash again.
They just aren't a car that fires up the imagination. So, while I'd personally like to see ALL old cars saved
and loved and preserved as if it is still 1951 or 1962, some things are just out of our control. Who has the
resources to save them all ?

I am happier to see this happen to a car like this than something I personally care about. But those three
guys that love Nash's ? To them, this is the worst thing they could imagine. Whaddya gonna do ?

A local guy recently bought this truck after hearing about it sitting in a barn for 60 years.

His intention was to build a street rod out of it, but it came together pretty easily and on it's
maiden voyage, he met some other cat with a mid-20's Studebaker in similar, "barn fresh"
condition, who just drove the hell out of it. He was so impressed by this Studebaker guy's
attitude and appreciation for patina and originality that he decided to ka-bosh the streetrod
plans and now proudly drives it (almost daily) as a monument to what it is ... just a great
old hunk of American iron, doing what it was meant to do ... be driven.
