Location: Indiana | not going to do any good !!! once the spammer is "in" and posts his spam, s/he never returns again anyway... we MUST get a way for the "new member" sign-in to thwart spammers or we MUST get a way to PREVENT *any* member, "new" or not, from posting more than one post per MINUTE (or two), that alone should prevent the spamming it's been brought up before - it keeps FALLING ON DEAF EARS

Location: Indiana | seems this POS posted everything between 2:32 and 2:45 (13 minutes) i'd personally be willing to accept a ONE post every FIFTEEN minutes... yes, most of us LEGIT members post more frequently than that on occasion - but it would be a nice price to pay to not log in one morning and see 86 posts and now we can't find the *REAL* "new threads" since our last visit but even at ONE per MINUTE, we would log in to see THIRTEEN instead of EIGHTY SIX (i didn't count them, just know it's a d@mn nuisance!) Expert Posts: 3575 Location: Netherlands | Banning is useless. Just delete the user and all his postings in one go. Timed-postinglimitations are a nusiance to everyone. This will also impact answering PM's for instance. If this forumsoftware is to obsolete to build in spam-countermeasures, the activation of new members should be handled manually by the admin or one of his mod-smurfs. It's not that there are soo many new members every day that this is an unbearable task. Also, it's usually easy enough to spot a potentional spammer by its meaningless username, or when in doubt, by its randomized emailadres.

ADMIN'S - SERIOUSLY, GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF YOUR A$$ AND DO SOMETHING!!! **PLEASE** Only ONE spammer today with 100 posts, which i alerted about 25 of, the other spammer hasnt ever returned although membership is still open, Both Spammers have now been alerted to Dave, the ONLY Admin.. Now attacking Dave with Verbal is seriously NOT needed, he probably is still asleep and not even aware of this latest Spammer, Plus already posted he has hardly slept this week due to repairing this Free membership forum , Telling him to get his "Head outta his A$$ " is totally uncalled for, and i am sure will only Pi$$ off many members here towards you.. Yes we all get annoyed at these spammers, but no need for verbal attacks on Dave.. .

Board Moderator & Exner Expert 10K+ Posts: 13049 Location: Southern Sweden - Sturkö island | Clive, I Think it's a common misunderstanding that us region moderators has access to the board. Again guys, only the board moderators and/or Dave can fix this, so please allow some delay - it will be fixed.

Elite Veteran Posts: 967 Location: Pittsburgh, PA | Requests to fix some of these issues are not "falling on deaf ears". With all due respect, you don't have the slightest !@$#% of what it takes to make a change like that. The software package the forums run on is now a dead platform with very little updates. I can't implement your suggestion because the option isn't in there. It might be able to be patched in the source code -- but I'm not a programmer and don't have the knowledge nor time to figure out how to do so. Do any of you? If so, you are more than welcome to write the patch for us. I'm getting pretty tired of people complaining when things around here have problems. The only 'solution' ever offered is to complain to Dave... Dave has an unlimited amount of time, money and patience to deal with eveything, right?

Elite Veteran Posts: 967 Location: Pittsburgh, PA | Oh... And the reason this person is able to post is called direct SQL injection. The old firewall prevented it, but not this old temporary one. I am working on it, but took the "luxury" of getting more than 1-2 hours sleep last night for the first time in over a week. I work a demanding full-time job, and have a family as well that also take time. I have basically given up sleep all week to try and fix this. Again... pretty !@#$!@#$ tired of the complaints.

Expert Posts: 2312 Location: Arizona | Dave, I really appreciate you running this board which I know has to be a money and time sink for you. I wish telling you to ignore the complainers could make their complaints go away but I's sure it still hurts to see all your effort rewarded with stupid complaints from people who make use of this FREE board and think you owe them something in the way of service. My hat is off to you. To those who aren't aware, and I wasn't until just recently, there IS a donate button you can use to help Dave defray the expenses of running this system. This is not running on some leftover PC and old US Robotics 56K modem on a phone line. It takes real hardware (costing real $money$) to make this thing work (I bet it's got a 99% uptime) and for the system to support anywhere from 50 to 200 concurrent users. Jim

Extreme Veteran Posts: 428 Location: McCleary WA | Not a complaint, Dave, just a question I don't see addressed here - can't someone just delete those spam postings? If you don't have time, which is totally understandable, could someone else be empowered to? I'd do it in a heartbeat if I knew how, but my computer skills are way out of date. Seems like there must be a way to weed out that junk. Other forums I used to read had moderators who looked over every posting before it was added, but then sometimes that became controversial when they started censoring subjects they didn't like. Can't please everyone, I know. This forum has been a life saver for my restoration project. I don't want to see it go away due to frustration or spammers.

Yes, Board Moderators can delete or move the Posts/Threads as they moderate All Threads No ,Regional Moderators cannot, They an only moderate their Region and Nether region. Only Admin can Ban / Delete a Member .

Location: Indiana | yeah, that's the kind of talk that i have to teach my teenagers not to do online... i'm not the best example, obviously, but i can't think of ever "threatening" anyone online... personality clashes, disagree with folks, differening political views, all daily, but can't recall ever threatening anyone i don't recall ever reading any post saying that the admins/mods were even LOOKING INTO the issue, not that they really 'owed us' one either, but it was a factor in my foot-in-mouth... again, i did apologize, i'm not perfect, never claimed to be... i've learned a lot about my personal "flaws" by being on this forum, i do strive to be better... i'm not an old dog yet, i can still learn some new tricks

Temporarily suspended to cool off Posts: 316 | well, there is no fixing it on any message board system really. If the user has a confirmed email address then that's that. There really is no protection you can provide beyond that. Honestly, some newer packages aren't any better against spam for that reason, and the reason that while some packages are better maintained, they are also easily attacked via sql injection which means then you can't do anything about spam at all. Just keep on keeping on, and if people want to have a coniption fit over it, ban THEM as well. Jesus f**k people, seriously. Throwing a fit like that over a few spam messages? Do you really have that little to do in your day?

Temporarily suspended to cool off Posts: 316 | a firewall is going to do nothing to prevent sql injection, well, not unless it actually prevents the person from connecting to the site outright.
