THANKS, IVY!

++I just got word today that the Abbey Car Show is going to be held once again, albeit under new management, at the old Holy Cross Abbey in Canon City, Colorado, on May 19, 2018. This has always been a good show that has been going on since 1982. It always has a good mix of cars -- classics (i.e., a '28 Bentley, Cords, Packards, Doosies, etc.), rods, muscle cars, sports cars (Kaiser Darrins, Lambos, etc.), cruisers, pickups, customs, etc., etc, etc. In fact, in 2000, they had what they called "The Circle of the Century," an exhibition consisting of one car representing every year from 1900 to 2000 around the track of the football field. Unfortunately, there was one exception: the '46 Ford "Woody" chosen for 1946 (obviously) broke down on the way and didn't make it, but there were electrics, steamers, and a few true "horseless carriages" from the pre-WWI days. They were just there on display, with no judging or voting, for people to admire. I didn't have the Big-Tailed Beast there, but my 375 HP/327 CID fuelie Vette was the 1965 car.
Anyhow, it's a great show and I'm glad to see it continue. A bonus is that the next day (Sunday, May 20) there will be another show in nearby Florence and it looks like Dennis Gage of "My Classic Car" will poke his handlebar in.
Joe

The Perkins Motor City MOPAR Fest (I don't know the official name) will tentatively be on June 16 this year. FCA is working with Perkins and the Southern Colorado MOPARs to tie it in with the Pikes Peak Hill Climb to make it a pretty big affair. Evidently FCA thinks Chrysler is being identified only with drag racing and they want to have more visibility in other venues, so they want to be in the Hill Climb block party as well. There'll be more info coming and one way or another it will get on here.

This just in from Ivy:

The Rocky Mountain Region WPC (Walter P Chrysler) Club holds an event each month. For March we are pleased to have made arrangements with local historian Lloyd Barger for a program about President Harry Truman which should prove both educational and entertaining. Mr. Barger will tell us about Truman’s love of cars and touring the U.S. to advance his political career. Almost all of the cars he owned were Plymouths, Dodges or Chryslers and pictures of those vehicles will be presented. An interesting highlight was his trip to Washington in his brand new Chrysler New Yorker without Secret Service protection. Humorous details of the trip are an autoholic treat. The second part of the program will detail how Truman’s love of trains and train travel resulted in the most historic election upset in U.S. history. Pictures and fascinating background detail the 31,700 mile whirlwind Whistle Stop Tour held during his campaign in 1948. Dressed up as Mr. Truman, Barger will hold a Presidential press conference at the end of the program so attendees can ask any questions about Truman’s political life. Mr. Barger is a winner of the National Freedom Foundations Medal for public speaking and was recently awarded a commemorative diploma from Truman State University in Missouri.

The event will be held Sunday, March 18 at the Forney Museum of Transportation, 5303 Brighton Blvd., Denver 80216. We’ll meet about 11:30 for a potluck lunch starting at 12:30. Mr. Barger’s presentation will begin at 1:30. Please enter through the side door in the rear parking lot. If you bring a collector car you can park in the front lot. Please bring either a side dish or dessert to share. Fried chicken, soft drinks, coffee and eating utensils/plates will be provided. A $5 donation will get you in the door (NOTE: This does not include admittance to the museum floor). Members of area Mopar clubs are invited to attend.

I am planning to go!

I went to the Golden Super Cruise last night with a few friends.  It was a lot of fun.  We brought a cooler.  We did the cruise loop twice.  We went to Bob's Burgers right across the street from the Coors brewery and I bought a six-pack of "the world's freshest Coors outside the brewery" from the liquor store in the same building as Bob's.  There were lots of neat cars and thousands of people!  I hadn't been there in a long time - I should go more often.  Happy summer!

The new steering wheel is AMAZING and I love the orange "Belvedere 500" accents.  That is super cool.

If any of you can come to the Colorado Springs First and Main Car Show on Saturday, August 4, it would be nice to see a few additional FWLs for a change... (I'm really getting tired of all the 21st century cars at these shows...) I saw Joe with his Big Tailed Beast at the last one and someone (whom I never saw at his car while I walked around) had a 1956 Dodge there. I'll be there with my 1957 Dodge Coronet since I finally got the last mechanical item fixed (rear end rebuilt). Here is the website for the show: http://www.firstandmaintowncenter.com/8th-annual-first-saturdays-ca...

Thanks, Don!  I won't be able to make it to the Springs this Saturday, but perhaps the September or October show.  I updated the calendar above too.

Mike, I hope you can make one of the shows. It would be good to meet you after all these years. Also, thanks for adding the show to the calendar.

Joe, sorry you can't be there this time. Maybe September or October?

It is most likely that I'll be there on September 1, but I think I might have the '65 Sport Fury. There also is the Old Colorado City show on August 19 which I hope to attend with the '60 Fury.

How did a 54 or 55 Chrysler Hemi engine get mixed in with John's 59 pictures?

Let's add a Rocky Mountain Swap Meet thread, for those of us that need to make room for more parts.
