Veteran Posts: 253 Location: Victoria Australia | Hi Guys, As I am changing the bearings, I notice my 1961 Chrysler Newport diff oil level when full, sits below axle tunnels and do not see how it would lubricate the rear axle wheel bearings. I have read that the bearing are just grease packed, is this true? The old ones had no grease on them. Do I just grease pack the new ones? Do I get sealed bearings? Or will the oil lubricate them? What to do?

A seal puller will get it out of there (it will be destroyed so make sure you have new seal in hand). A bearing race driver will push the new one in squarely. Don't try to over-push it as that will cause it to distort.

Location: North Australia | Alex, sealed bearings are the way to go. I recall I had difficulty in finding these here in Oz, but I cant recall the detail. I got my bearings from CBC. Be aware that there is potential for a problem when mounting the bearings, I discovered this when doing my car. The problem is the radius on the inner race of the new bearings is bigger than the shoulder on the axles. The bearing ends up fitted against the shoulder too far onto the axle and makes a problem when setting up the axle end float. This is important to get right. I can give you more detail if you need it. Steve.

Veteran Posts: 253 Location: Victoria Australia | Got a NOS 2.93 Crown and pinion for US $145. I have also had a drain plug fitted to the banjo housing and will place 3 small earth magnets in the housing, one at each end and one in the centre. Try to protect and preserve components as much as possible.

A magnetic drain plug would be much better and should already be one there. If that magnet should happen to move around and get caught by the ring gear you can kiss it all goodbye !! Jerry
