First post here.

Just bought a 56 Imperial, and will be trailering it home soon. I need a measurement though, what is the drum to drum width of the rear axle? Searched all over the internet, but cannot find a solid number.

Thanks in advance.

Please measure it carefully and post it here. I don't have that one either.

I have a 1956 Imperial, but it has a newer rear axle in it. Why do you need this dimension? The factory service manual lists the track width, so you could calculate the length of the rear axle if account for the wheels’ offset.

That chart does not have the 56 Imperial, that is why Powerflite would also like them.

I would consult the service manual......if I had one.

I would like to see how close the other rear ends I am considering will work out. I am doing a 4x4 conversion with a Dodge Ram 2500, or possibly a 3500 dually, Cummins 5.9 turbo diesel (leaning towards an early 12V to eliminate the electronics), and either a 5 or 6 speed transmission. The Dually could be converted to single rear wheel by simply using the 2500 wheels. The front is converted by removing the spacers. The body width of the Imperial and Ram are essentially the same, and the wheelbase of a single cab long bed is 134.7" which is close enough to the Imp's 133", but I have the skills to modify the frame if it is too long, or if some grafting needs to be done. Not sure if I could pull off decent rear flares to use the dually as intended. The reason for a dually is that more of them show up as 4x4 with manual transmissions, more towing capacity, and the diesels eat automatics.

Why not restore as it is a complete car? Cost for one. It would cost more to restore than it would be worth in the end. There are plenty of restored examples. I can do what I want , and have it on the road faster. I want to drive it as much as I can, and the 5.9 Cummins gets better mpg's than the 354 Hemi it has now. Plus I will have a unique tow rig. Now if I could find the running gear from a 56 Power Wagon, that would be awesome looks wise, but not really practical from a driving standpoint.

The dimensions on the document are not exact, but I know from experience with my car that those numbers are very close. I will see if I can help you with your dimensions when I’m back in town.

What body style Imperial do you have? You are right that you can do what you like, but I hope you make your modifications easily reversible. If you ever tire of the car, you have zero chance of getting any money back out of it if you hack it up. There is a member here that stuffed a 5.9 Cummins in a 1960 Dodge station wagon that I thought was really cool. Most people on this site will piss all over for what you’re doing, but I’d be curious to see it if done well.
