Expert Posts: 1348 Location: Valley Forge, Pa. | I'm sitting on break at work looking up multi-blade radiator fans out of curiosity and can't remember what direction the pump turns? I think it's standard but the more I think about it the less I am sure. Not that it's important, just bothering me.[1960 318]. Thanks, Karl.

Doesn't apply to the Forward Look cars obviously, but a good tidbit to know when junkyarding for your daily driver . . . Gregg

Expert Posts: 3777 Location: NorCal | Off the topic but I've noticed that some of the serpentine conversion kits don't use a different pump even though the pump turns backwards. I was interested in a kit for a BB Mopar so I called the manufacturer and asked about the pump, I was told that the pump would work in either direction (at least on the BB Mopar). Can't quite wrap my head around that but they've sold more than one kit with no complaints.

But if it has angled blades, then it must spin in the correct direction..

Expert Posts: 1348 Location: Valley Forge, Pa. | Referring to the reverse pump direction of some serpentine belt set-ups. Maybe I'm just having a problem imagining this, but isn't the whole system built to flow in one direction? With flat blades, it would push the same amount of water but the water pump is shaped to flow 1 direction. Would you simply flip the thermostat and the rad. & heater hoses? Would the whole system be as efficient?

Would the whole system be as efficient? Irregardless of impeller rotation, in a water pump (or any centrifugal pump) the water enters the center of the impeller and exits the outer ring. If the blades are straight rotation doesn't matter. If the blades are designed for a certain rotation, curved, angled, etc then turning it the wrong way will result in poor or no flow. A cross flow radiator wouldn't care which way the coolant flows, but the hot coolant usually enters from a top location and exits at a lower location to take advantage of natural thermal cycling, IE cool liquid sinks, hot rises. Our cars have a vertical flow to make use of this effect. Model T's didn't even have a pump, just thermo-siphon cooling.
