Member Posts: 6 | Hi, new here and have a question. My 61 had the cast iron trans and I swapped a727 into the car. I cobled a mount using a plate and that spring/plate without the rubber mount. Problem is the engine and trans are moving up and down in the car on that spring. Has someone done this swap and what did you do for a mount? Thank you!

I centered it on a bearing race that was the right size, but you could use anything. If you used a later 727, it should be even easier to use it's original mount. How does that piece mount in the car?? and what does the 62-65 mount look like? (m3x.jpg) Attachments ---------------- m3x.jpg (58KB - 198 downloads)

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9604 Location: So. Cal | The 3 bolts mount to the original trans crossmember. 2 of them go to holes that already exist and the other must be drilled into it. The 727 hole is located further forward. The original mount has a round bottom to it as shown at the bottom of this picture. Expert 5K+ Posts: 9604 Location: So. Cal | Just extend your crossmember forward with a plate and mount a standard rubber mount onto it.

Expert Posts: 3768 Location: NorCal | If you want a more positive mount, use the later spool mount. This installation requires welding/fabrication. (transmount.jpg) Attachments ---------------- transmount.jpg (72KB - 196 downloads)

Regular Posts: 66 Location: Ferndale, WA 98248 | Does your car still have the original 1961 motor in it? 1961 and earlier motors that came with iron trans are not compatible with 1962 and newer aluminum 727 trans. I just dropped a 1971 440 into my 1961 Newport, and also had to also swap out the iron trans for a newer aluminum 727 trans. Luckily for me I had the complete driveline including the rear axle from the 1971 donor car, so it all went into the Newport.

Regular Posts: 66 Location: Ferndale, WA 98248 | The shop working on my car is named Heavy Metal Custom Shop for a reason. They took the center section of the crossmember from the 71 NYer that bolted to the trans, and cut the ends off. Then took the crossmember from the 61 Newport, and cut off the ends that bolted to the car. Then they welded the ends from the Newport to the center section from the NYer so everything bolted together. They came up with that solution, not me. The leaf spring mounts on the 71 NYer 8 3/4 rear axle were too wide for the 61 Newport, so they also cut the mounts off the axle and welded them back on to fit the Newport. The wheels now extend a little wider on each side, which fills the wheel wells nicer. The 71 440 dropped right onto the existing motor mounts in the 61 Newport and fit like a glove
