Do you have to peel off the stainless cover? I wouldn't like to do that.

Sid, on this style of trunk lock, the stainless steel cap must be removed, unless the code # is printed on the outer shell of the long bar (doubtful). I'm the resident locksmith. https://www.acmesafe.ca/services/vintage_auto_finished_projects.html

This lock does not use regular "pin" tumblers, it's what we call a "side-bar-wafer" type lock, which is relatively complicated to fit keys to if there is no code #.

I have replacement caps for these locks and have made keys for many many many over the years. These particular ones are very similar to GM trunk locks of that era.

Thanks for the info Ian! I was hoping for pins (tumblers) as these are easy to change/alter to fit a certain key. Are you positive? Is this the same type of wafer-lock the glove box uses?

The glove box lock uses a different type of wafer lock, but it only has 4 of six tumblers that are in the trunk lock. And yes, I'm positive on the type of trunk lock as it's the same as my 1960 Saratoga

This is what the lock looks like once you take it apart. This one is a new sub-assembled GM version and does not show the tumblers, springs or tumbler cap that goes over those slots where the wafer tumblers slide in.

Ian, do you know what kind of lock is in the 1960 Chrysler wagon tailgate? I don't have door keys for my car, the ignition switch has been swapped out and it does have keys.

Nick, I've never worked on a tail gate lock for one of those. I'm assuming it should be the same as the door key, but could possibly be the same as the glove box key. If you pull a door lock cylinder out, a good old timer locksmith can make keys for it. Or send it to me and I'll do it.

Not for this one, it is from my 60 Adventurer that has a key and a matching glovebox lock. I just wanted to check, if I buy a glove box lock with matching key, if I can mate a trunk lock to the glove box key. This is for a 61 Fury, same type of trunk lock (missing) but different glove box lock (missing keys).

On my friend's '64 wagon, the tailgate switch uses the same key as the doors.

I'm going to try all the keys I have laying around to see if I have one that works.

Ian, but this one looks like a pin-type lock? Not?

Yes, Sid, that is a pin-tumbler lock.
