Viewed from the FRONT of the engine, does the crank normally rotate clockwise or counterclockwise? I had assumed clockwise and read clockwise, but considering most references on auto parts being from the driver seat, that would actually make it opposite... Counter-clockwise?

Going to run the primer tool on the oil pump and don't want to run it the wrong way and empty it .... So, tool should run counter-clockwise and also rotate crank a quarter turn either way 3 times while priming? Check oil is getting to all rockers and install a gauge at sending unit position at rear top of block? Or is that not necessary at this point?

Too much work in this motor to mess it up at this stage, so maybe second-guessing myself too often it seems..

You know for certain that the distributor rotates in a clockwise direction. So therefore, the oil pump primer tool must also run clockwise. I'm also pretty sure that the crank turns clockwise as you look at it from the front.

You don't really need an oil pressure gauge at this point. Since you're not running the motor, you are just checking that oil gets to where it is supposed to. You will find that most of the oil ends up in the lifter valley. After I saw some small amount of oil in the rockers while turning the motor slowly by hand, I ran the oil primer and turned the motor over with the starter, while I had gobs of oil around the lifters. I reasoned that this would give a good start to the new lifters & cam to wear properly with plenty of oil around them. And it also helped to get more oil to the rockers.

The best way of doing this is 2 guys, 1 on the drill motor and the other turning the crank. There's 1 point where oil feeds to one rocker bank, you'll notice the drill runs easier at that point. as you turn the engine over eventually you''ll get to where the other bank oils.

Good tips. I will run it on a test stand later too, but right now I can't mount a starter. But, that is what I do with long dormant engines, crank them with starter and no plugs to get oil moving before actually starting them. I have left valley cover off and planned on dumping the last quart around lifters, but after running the drill first, so I can see when new oil is making it to the lifters.

Well, I was able to run battery powered drill and turn crank together. Oil valley filled and bleed holes above each lifter passed oil. Intake rocker shaft is also dripping oil. But, the exhaust side has no trace of oil in shaft or bleed holes in stands (see pics...)

Old battery for drill is recharging now... Should I be worried that the exhaust shafts don't have oil yet?

I had Bob Walker refurbish those rocker arms some years ago and they look very well done, so I doubt there is anything done wrong there... Refurbished heads I bought from Neil some years ago too and he was pretty exacting, so figuring I just did not hit the right crank position so far... Or, do both rocker shaft passages load a the same crank position and I just have not spun it enough yet?

They're 2 different places. Probably just not there yet. When assembling I drop a thin welding rod down the oil holes in the block to make sure the holes in the cam bearings are in the right place. The stands have to be in the right place also.
