I know the 1962 and newer automatics aren't compatible with the 1961 and older 8 bolt crank flanges for the Mopar big blocks, but what about manual transmissions? I know the 426 Hemi and some of the other big blocks used an 8 hole bolt pattern flywheel after 1962, are these cranks the same as the old big block cranks?

I was digging through stuff in the garage tonight and I put my 1960 Chrysler 413 crankshaft on my old 318 Poly flywheel. Crank fits perfectly even though the flywheel only has 6 bolts. Flywheel is the right diameter and has 172 teeth on the ring gear. Can a 1962 or later big block manual transmission be adapted to my 1960 engine by using this flywheel? Just curious.

The '62-later 8-bolt cranks don't extend from the back of the block as much as the '61-earlier which means you need a spacer (adapter) for the clutch housing. The other issue is the way the flywheel indexes on the crank flange, the early flywheel indexes on the outer diameter of the flange while the later flywheel indexes on a raised register.

In short, without a flange adapter, I doubt if that flywheel will work to swap in a later trans.

Are you talking about putting the 8 speed on the Poly or the 413? If the Poly the 392 hemi adaptor will work with a SB 727, just a matter of weather the 8 speed is the same. If the 413 does anyone make an adaptor for BB to the SB tranny? And of course getting the 8 speed to work with the old engine.

This was just a curiosity, I thought maybe an A833 4 speed (or other manual trans) could be put behind an old 413 if using this flywheel, an early big block bell housing and matching starter. Since the crank is long, one could put an adapter/spacer where the trans bolts to the bell housing.

I'm not planning on doing anything with this 413 any time soon, but may explore possibilities some day. The 318 poly for my wagon will be mated to an early 1990s Mopar automatic overdrive trans.

The adapter/spacer will need to be at the block, to move the bell back, so that the starter will engage the ring gear.
The next question is using a post-62 starter (so it bolts to the bell) with the 172 tooth ring.
As my memory fades I seem to recall that the 426 Hemi that used the 172 tooth wheel may have had a specific starter...not sure.

Yes, the '66-'69 Hemi with the 172-tooth flywheel used a direct drive starter instead of the gear reduction type.

I recently bought a '61 413 car that last had a A833 in it. I bought it disassembled - there is a modified mystery bell housing that was used with the A833 and original style starter. It is a factory A745 car, so apparently they found the original style bell housing did not work. I have both transmissions and both bell housings. The flywheel has six holes, don't know if that's original.

If you get serious about the project I'll be putting mine back to a A745, so the bell housing and A833 are available.

Do you have pictures of the bellhousing you can post?
