When I bought my 1960 Chrysler New Yorker Town & Country wagon I found that the dash mounted mirror had been sawn off and a mirror installed above hanging from the upper windshield trim. The mirror head looks like a Chrysler part but the bracket does not have a part number on it. The mirror fits over the chrome trim inside the windshield and uses a single screw to hold it. This screw is the existing screw from the trim so no new holes were drilled.

I posted this on Facebook and found that this kind of mirror was also used on earlier cars with dash mirrors. People postulate that it was an accessory you could get if you did not like the dash mounted mirror. I also looked at another '60 wagon that had the same mirror and found a vintage picture of another. Here are pictures of the 1960 version.

I would like to find any information on these, especially any accessory book listings or other documentation.

And here is the 1957 version including a filler you put in the original mount. Courtesy of James Rawa.

Not certain of all the details / requirements on ordering a rear-view mirror in the more "standard" top location instead of the dash mounted rear-view mirror, but it was definitely an option. As pointed out the most common application where the dash mounted mirror was deleted is in police vehicles.

When the dash mounted rear-view mirror was deleted, the factory used a simple plug to fill the mounting hole / location on top of the dash.

Here is a dash from a 1961 Dodge with the "factory delete" dash mounted mirror. Pictures show the plug in place on the dash and top / back of plug removed.

I ordered a 1966 version of the JC Whitney catalog to see if mine is in there. The one posted above looks like it's an earlier version as the newest vehicle listed is 1960.

The mirror in my car has been there since at least 1973 when the second owner got the car. I asked him about it and he didn't know it was supposed to be on the dash.

Unfortunately, I never saw that 61 Dodge as a complete car. Bought the complete dash and box of miscellaneous parts from the car. Not certain if a mirror was included. Though do have several rear-view mirrors from 1960-61 models, would have to check if any are not dash mounted style.

My 1960 wagon also has a rear view mirror mounted top center of the windshield, but the dash mount and stalk are still there (just not the original mirror). I next time I'm by the car, I'll take a picture of the mirror to see if it is the same as the one in your 1960 Chrysler wagon. My car has been sitting since 1977, so mirror would have been added a long time ago.

Very cool. Can you also tell me if your wagon has a smooth roof or if it has the 5 grooves in it? And what the build date is?

This is from the 1962 JC Whitney catalog. They spread the years to cover up to 1961 but still the same part. Mine looks different from the new one posted above which looks like James Rawa's one as they both appear to have to mounting holes for the mirror head.

Digging through the parts that were purchased from the 1961 Dodge with the dash mount "mirror delete" plug referenced in my other post, believe that I located the rearview mirror that was originally in the car.

The mounting bracket that mounts the mirror to the interior clearly has mopar stamping PCD and part number 2082221 on it.
However, searching ALL the master parts catalogs from 1960-74 this part number was NOT listed in any of them.

Most of the mirrors are listed as "mirror package", and in the 1961 Dodge master parts catalog there was one listed specifically as "Police mirror pkg". It was also interesting that a lot of the mirror components had part numbers beginning with the same "2082" part prefix that's on the base.

The mirror body looks to be a standard mopar style rearview mirror and the mounting bracket doesn't have any provision to attach the sunvisors, which is present on the later mopar mirror brackets for the style that moved the mount for the mirror from the dash to roof.

Also at first, wasn't certain if the black paint on the mirror was original or not. And though not 100% certain, after examining it closely, the way the paint is applied especially on the front where the actual mirror is mounted it looks original as it's done way too nice inside the recessed area to be spray bombed later.

Some further searching came across this for sale ad for a 1961 Dodge polara 4-dr sedan. The ad stated that the car was an ex police car.

What's of interest is that the dash has the same "mirror delete" plug that I showed in the previous post. And it also has rearview mirror mounted to roof / windshield header

Some more info, here are pictures from the 1961 Dodge "police" brochure. All of these show the mirror NOT mounted to dash.

Now of course because there never seem to be any exact rules for how or why mopar built / optioned cars. Here's an actual 1961 Dodge police car with the mirror mounted on the dash !

Interesting. There would have to be some provision under the headliner to mount that mirror and strange that it wouldn't hold the visors. I wonder if the police visors are cut out to clear the mirror? On my '60 wagon since the visors aren't cut out, they hit the mirror so you can't turn them all the way to the windshield.

Check this out from this Jay Leno video on a '61 Polara CHP car. Shows the mirror, and the visors are just hanging out there without support in the middle. Weird that they would do that since they could have used the same mirror and visor design as the Imperials, which didn't use the dash-mounted mirror that year.

Wow! That was fast. No wonder it doesn't have a Chrysler part number on it.

Another accessory for 57 was a compass that fit in the factory mirror base. I looked for one but never found one!

When I first saw that mirror mount on the dash I thought it would be the perfect mount for one of those liquid-filled compasses. Or a cell phone holder.

My 64 880, the last Mopar based on the original unibody shell, has a roof mounted rear view mirror. Part number 2299846. It has the holders for the ends of the visors, and the visors are cut out for the mirror.

Yes, they went to the roof mounted mirror for all in 1963. The dash-mounted one came back in 1965 but only on wagons with rear air conditioning.

I have always thought the dash mounted mirior is pretty cool.. Being 6.6 tall I find driving a 61 ply a chore to changel lanes. Have to slouch just to see out large back window. Cool option there.

I'm 6'5" tall so I know what you're saying. My 300F is the only car I have with the dash mirror and all the mirrors are a pain. The side mirrors are full of tailfins and I have a hard time getting used to the rear view. But the view out the windshield is much better than even my new cars.

Now on my 1960 wagon, they put that overhead mirror on and sawed off the dash mirror. At first I didn't even notice the mirror above. I haven't driven the car so I didn't pay attention to the difference. When I started this investigation I took it off for the pictures and then someone asked me if I thought it was better to have it up top. So I put it back in and sat in the car and the top half of the view is blocked by the rear a/c unit hanging down from the ceiling. Might be ok for someone shorter. I should stick it in the F and see what it's like.

Here's a picture of entire line of 1960 Dodge police cars.
Take a close look through the windshield, can see that all have the roof / top header mounted rear view mirror instead of the dash mount style.

The dash mounted mirror is a characteristic for the later FL cars and the only downside is that it might block the view forward in certain angles.
This is a thing that one get's used to if one drives the cars.
I changed the right rearview mirror glass to a concave one that was a gift from a dear friend. So, now I have a very good rear view from the fender mounted mirrors and the Mirrormatic.

Do you mean convex? Concave is the opposite of what the later models from the factory went to when they changed from the flat glass and went to convex mirrors with the "warning" objects in the mirror are closer than they appear.

If you really did go concave, what are the images like in the mirror compared to the standard factory version?

Look at 1961 Plymouth police cars, almost all except one (NYPD car) had a dash mounted mirror. Brochure also shows a dash mirror.

Finally got a few pictures of the rear view mirror mounted on the top of the windshield of my 1960 Plymouth wagon. Looks like the same stalk as Nick's, but the mirror itself is different.

Yep, looks just like mine. My mirror is the day/night one, yours is the standard mirror.

Thanks for posting that. Curious to see what a factory cop car one looks like.

Nick,

Maybe it wasn’t clear, but the picture of the black one that I included in the other post is from a 1961 Dodge police car. That info is to the best of my knowledge. And in addition to the mirror dash plug, the dash had other items that would back that up, for example: hole and mount drilled for spotlight, radio delete plate that was cut for some other style non factory radio.

Or are you referring to wanting to see a rear view mirror from a 1960 Dodge police car to compare with the other one used on 1961 models ?

Looking for 1960 police version. The one you have obviously screws into some sort of bracket under the headliner behind the windshield frame. If that's also true in 1960, then the next question is does that mount only exist on police vehicles or is it actually just built in to all the cars.

Sorry for the confusion.

very cool addon... its JCwhitney.

Wow! That was fast. No wonder it doesn't have a Chrysler part number on it.

Another accessory for 57 was a compass that fit in the factory mirror base. I looked for one but never found one!

Greg

When I first saw that mirror mount on the dash I thought it would be the perfect mount for one of those liquid-filled compasses. Or a cell phone holder.

Happened to be going through some pictures and found this
- A dash compass in place of where the dash mounted rear view is usually and the rear view mirror moved to the roof

Plus you have to love that "foot" pedal that was all the rage in the 70's !!!

Not mine but know that the car was a 1962 Chrysler Newport station wagon

Check this out from this Jay Leno video on a '61 Polara CHP car. Shows the mirror, and the visors are just hanging out there without support in the middle. Weird that they would do that since they could have used the same mirror and visor design as the Imperials, which didn't use the dash-mounted mirror that year.

That's crazy, after 40+ years into FL's I would have sworn that all 57-61 had the dash mounted mirror. You are correct, not Imperial in 61!

I personally like the dash mounted mirrors, part of the FL world, like push buttons and typical 50s. They also make full width sun visors possible.

Add-on gauges too. The mirror looks like a later one with the safety padding. No A/C or clock but has power windows.

Here's a picture of a 1960 Plymouth police wagon with the top mirror. Looks like the grille emblem is upside down on it.

If anyone has a lead to those adapter brackets, I'm interested.
I'm searching one for my '58 Plymouth.

Thanks.
