This is a funny question. On the dual point distributors, do the points open at the same time or is the opening staggered some. I've checked mine with the distributor out of the car and the points do not open at the same time. I'm wondering now if I have the correct points installed in the car.

Can someone tell me where is a good place to buy the points. I've had trouble finding points for a dual point distributor.

Thanks!!!

Sam

I'm pretty sure that the open at the same time. (UPDATE: Just checked my spare dual point distributor and they open ever so slightly differently. One slightly earlier than the other. Both are open at the same time. One closes earlier than the other).

Regardless if you really need points, you need to tell us what the car is and more importantly what the distributor is.

My 56 Dodge D500 came with a IBK-4301A (PN 1642 392) and with that knowledge, I can look up the points for that distributor in the 55-58 Mopar Parts catalogue as PN 1658 604. The I can try to find 1658 604 points via the internet.

I found several eBay hits for "1658604 distributor points".

*OR* you can forget about the points and go to Pertronix (which is what I did)

The purpose of a dual point distributor is to increase the "dwell", or time the circuit in closed, without making the point gap too small. Longer dwell = more fully charged coil primary. When the points open, the magnetic field of the primary coil winding collapses, inducing a surge of voltage in the secondary side creating spark voltage. More dwell = more spark energy.

Thank you for your reply !!!!.. I think my points are more separated than what you saw in your distributor. I'll go double check with the thoughts of what you described and I'll reply again. Thank you very much for checking this for me. I've been concerned about this actually.

My distributor uses OEM points 1658-541. I got this from my parts catalogue. My distributor is Part Number 1626656 and 1AZ-4003C. serial is JC13978. Without the phone cameras, I don't think I would have been able to read these numbers. My distributor is in real good condition.

Will the Pertronix igniter work on a 6 volt system. I've looked and can't find a 6 volt system.

Thanks again for your help. Very valuable to me.

Hello 56D500Boy... I just checked my distributor and my points work exactly like you described yours work. I didn't look as closely as you the first time. Your explanation helped me know better what to look for. Are the points for the single point distributor the same as the points for the dual point distributor? I've wondered this but can't really tell by looking at part numbers.

Hello Normsclassicradio... Thank you for the reasoning behind the dual points. I did not know this and was wondering why dual points. This makes very good sense. Thank you!!!!!

Sam: I was going to my New Old Stock (NOS) parts guy this AM to pick up a new horn relay for my 56 Dodge. While I had him on the phone (before I went), I asked him about your distributor and points using your numbers. He had several sets of points. So while I was there, I bought a matched set of new old replacement stock (NORS) AMPCO AL-39 points (two sets in a box), designed for your distributor.

PM me your mailing address and I will mail them to you.

Or you can try these ones:
