I need/want to check the timing on my 56 Dodge D500 hemi. The Sun Electric tuning card says 2 degrees Before Top Dead Center.

Are these the correct marks (below)?

First a bare damper (not mine) that I've annotated, then mine:

Location: Beaumont TX		Your timing marks look like mine, 1955 259, and I read them like you have shown in the first picture. I set my timing at 4 BTDC.

I don't know if I've been reading right but the way you have the first picture market looks logical to me.

Location: Under the X in Texas		Harmonic balancers have inner and outer steel vulcanized with a rubber center. The outer steel can and WILL eventually move on the aging, deteriorating rubber. I never trust an old balancer's timing marks. Mechanically find top dead center for #1 cylinder and make your own marks. OR, if really deteriorated, have your balancer rebuilt (revulcanized) by one of the several companies offering the service and do this BEFORE it totally comes apart potentially destroying your radiator.

Location: Beaumont TX		In my 1955 Plymouth/Dodge 259, the pully on the crank, which is where the timing marks are, is solid. It does not have the rubber a harmonic balancer has. The fan belt hub is pressed on to the part that goes on the crank shaft. Still a good idea to verify the timing marks with a TDC check.

Location: Beaumont TX		Pictures of my Crankshaft pulley with Timing Marks that does not have the rubber a normal harmonic balancer has. 1955 259 V8... There is no harmonic balance on this car as far as I can tell.

Finally got of my aSH and dug out my cheapo Equus inductive timing light and checked the timing.
Assuming that the harmonic damper is okay (yes, I need to confirm that for sure), the timing was
set previously by a *PROFESSIONAL* at about 8 deg *AFTER* TDC . Hmm..... and I paid for this??

Never again. Spec for the D500 is 2 deg Before TDC. I set it to 4 deg BTDC and went for a spin.
Much improved power and no more strange hesitation. Why I waited so long to check and reset the timing,
only my procrastinating Mother (now dead for 6 years) knows. DUH.

I will set it to 2 deg BTDC (after checking TDC) sometime soon.

Location: Beaumont TX		If the engine is not pinging, why not leave it set at 4 degrees BTDC? It will run stronger and get better gas mileage.

I can't remember if you still have points or not but as the points wear down, the timing changes. Maybe this could be part of the reason your timing was so far off. I wonder if the professional disconnected the vacuum advance before setting the timing?

Any real good guesses as to the diameter of a 56 Dodge Harmonic balancer? Measuring from above I *think* it might be 6.375" but I really can't tell accurately. I don't want to take the rad out just to measure it the pulley/balancer diameter.

I want to buy one of the MSD 8985 timing mark sheets *IF* what they have will work. They have 6.375" but they skip 6.50" and go directly to 6.75".

Okay. Working on replacing the water pump on my 56 Dodge D500 so the rad is out. While it is out it is easy to measure the balancer diameter.
It is just a tad (maybe 1/32") over 6.5". So the MSD tapes will not work without some size adjustments (stretched/shrunk) to get a 6.375 or 6.75 tape to work.

On the upside, I can confirm that the timing marks are like these (although mine need to be "enhanced" (grooved out) somehow.

Thanks for the offer Del. With a hemi, I can see top dead center by removing the No. 1 spark plug and put a wooden dowel down the opening and
then watching the dowel move up to top dead center (using a 1.25" 1/2" socket and a 1/2" breaker bar).

Location: So. Cal		I usually end up setting the timing to around 8-10 degrees before top dead center. Much better performance & runs much cooler with more NOx. That could be the reason why the mechanic had retarded it, because he set it according to emissions output, which is common.

That wasn't Del. Del's stuff is fine. It was Samstrader who is normally fine. However the photos he posted in this thread are terrible with all that white around them.
