I have a 3:54 stock rearend in my 55 Dodge now. I'm considering swapping to a 3:23 rearend. This is to have a better highway cruising range. With the stock rear it seems like it running the engine to high to maintain a 70mph speed on road trips. The acceleration with the 3:23 will be a little more slugglish , but will make highway driving more comfortable, but I think I can live with it.

Any other thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks
Ernie

I run 2.76 and love them. I cruise at 70-75 mph with low noise (except wind noise). They get great gas mileage and aren't an issue at the stop light if you have a 3 speed automatic. They may be a bit steep with a powerflite. I probably wouldn't go higher than 2.94 with powerflite. If you swap an 8 3/4 from a '65-'67 B-body into your car, you can swap out different ratios and try them out pretty easily. I have a bunch of different 8 3/4 gears in my garage so you can try them out to see how you like them. I can also help you out with moving the spring perches if you like.

Nathan, Thanks for the info. It seems like the simple thing to do. I would get better brakes too! and wouldn't need a drum puller to do the brakes ether. I'm going to start looking for a rear end that I can work with. I'm in no hurry to do this since it wasn't that long ago I had the orig reared rebuilt.

Yeah, the only reason why I swapped out my original rear was to change the gear ratio. It is so difficult to get optional gears for the original that I got rid of it. Let me know if you need any help. I did the same to my '56 Plymouth. For the new spring perches, you need to get the narrowest perches you can find on Summit. Or you can cut the originals off your axle and use those. That approach is better because you get the original shock mounts with it too.

I just put 3.08s in my 56 dodge royal, no problem with sluggish but this thing is for cruisin, not drag racing.

Not that simple, there is no flange-axle 8 3/4" that is a direct swap into a '55. Spring centers are different.
