Its even worse when they sit outside next to a garage that is packed full of old baby clothes, newspapers, cardboard boxes and other assorted garbage. We have all seen it. The car could have been in there!

If the time comes when more parts become available from this car, I'm looking for a soft back window gasket for a '58 Belvedere 2 door hardtop. My car came from AZ and the gasket is cracked and rock-hard.

Sadly, this is all too true. Usually though, the car isn’t parked next to the garage,it’s parked out back under a tree so leaves and debris can pile up on it for decades and rust it out,or it’s parked in 3 foot tall grass and weeds to sit on flat tires in the sun and rain while rats and animals chew the wires and make nests under the hood. The air cleaner has to be removed too and put in the trunk so dust, dirt and rat piss can get into the intake and engine. These people will also invariably brag that they drove it to that spot and parked it there 30 or 40’years ago,as though that’s a guarantee that it should still fire right up. Usually if someone sees the car and tries to save it they will be told “I saw one like it sell for x number of dollars at Barret Jackson.” and then follow that statement with an obscene asking price and the comment “if I can’t get that for it,it can sit there. It’s only going up in value”.

I have to wonder what goes through a persons mind who does this. How can you care about the car and allow it to rot away? It’s certain slow destruction for the car. The most important part of Forward Look ownership is preservation. If you care about it enough to save it,put it inside the garage or build a place to store it. You can’t care about these vehicles and leave them to rot away outside in the elements.

Park the new throwaway vehicles outside. The new Honda/Toyota/whatever belongs in the driveway, not in the garage. It’s a utilitarian piece of equipment that’s heading to the junkyard eventually anyway. Better yet don’t buy a new car in the first place, buy a newer used car if you have to have one for daily use and then use the money you saved and put it toward restoring the old car that’s sitting. Just a thought.

You can’t live in “tomorrows” and “one days” you only have todays. you have to work each day toward making it happen or it never will. Just my 2 cents.

Seeing what became of that poor 1957 Belvedere 2dr hardtop at the beginning of the thread is depressing and should serve as a cautionary tale. That owner is truly delusional if he thinks that after it’s been sitting 42 years outside rotting into the ground, that now,at 82 years old he’s going to ever restore that car.

EIGHT 1959 Buicks!? Wow! Any pictures? How far gone are they? That’s my favorite GM car. I assumed from the photo he had the one car that he planned to restore that just sat all those years. That’s quite a collection. Sounds like he just kept buying more and more and things got away from him.

I bought one a few years ago that was stored inside. However, there were also dogs in the building that used the car as their toilet. Sadly it's too far gone to restore, but still has lots of great parts.
It was stored in a body shop with some other cars. The owner had some health issues and temporarily closed the shop hoping to re-open one day.

I'm restoring worse cars than that. What would you want for it?

The Miss Belvedere color scheme seems like it was popular, same with the rusty condition 50 years later!

I have a solid but stripped down Savoy to build with the parts from the Belvedere. The Belvedere would take 10 times more time and money to restore than it’s worth. Dog urine is apparently like acid, all of the upper horizontal metal (except the roof) is paper thin and lots of gaping holes. The A pillars are barely hanging on, and there’s no lower windshield channel left. The hood folds in half when you try to lift it. The car may have fared better left outside.
Bottom picture shows how it was stored.
The Savoy was stored outside in western Oklahoma since 1965, and was fairly solid considering. The floors and rockers are rusted, but only pinholes here and there on the body, and some dents. Parts were stolen off the car through the years, so the Belvedere is a perfect parts car for it.
