I’m getting around to looking at the transmission out of my 58 Fargo Sweptside pickup during the restoration of this rare forward looking truck.
It is the basic dodge 3 speed transmission that is a 3 on the tree behind the factory v8.
The truck had been parked for years when I got it, and I have no idea on how the transmission was performing before being parked.
I’ve never worked on a 3 speed before, and I have a few questions.
Can anyone suggest a basic checklist of what to look for and feel with the transmission on the bench that could help me get a feel for how worn it is?
Also, is there a refresh or rebuild kit available for the 3 speed, and if so does anyone know a source for one?

Any hints or tips on working on or rebuilding one of these would be greatly appreciated.

Todd: Assuming that your transmission is a 3 spd without OverDrive, it will look like the diagram below. From the 1950-65 Mopar Parts interchange pdf, the transmission for a late '57-58 D100 3 spd std trans with controls on side of case; w/o 0.D. is PN 1789 062. The 1958 Chrysler and Desoto (the big cars) and the 58 Taxis 3 spd equivalent was PN 1738 232.

Typically, when I search for 1956 Dodge stuff, I get links to std trans gasket kits like this: Not sure what happens when you search on 1958 Dodge D100. Worn parts would include bearings, bushings and gear sets. Probably can't tell until it is torn down.

Why not just drive it to see how it works before you go down that road (so to speak)?

That is my tranny.
I get your point about driving it to see, but because it is so rare; 1 of 11 Fargo Sweptsides built in 58, and 1 of 3 with the v8 it is getting a full every nut and bolt restoration so I want the tranny to be to the same level visually, and mechanically.
