So, a quick history. Purchased this 61 Fury back in July 2019 and it had been professionally set up at a Mopar shop in Denver where I had the car shipped to me here in Virginia. For the last year it has started up warm or cold the first try, idle's nicely, drives great etc but it seems like over the course of a couple weeks started running really rough. I pulled the old auto light plugs and put in the Iridium's that I've read here on the forum that work well for others but it still runs rough, won't idle without stalling out and acts as if the timing is off. Can the timing go out over the course of normal driving habits? Car was delivered with new distributor, points etc. I don't have any vacuum leaks. I thought I got bad gas so I put premium and fuel stabilizer in but no difference. I don't want to throw more parts at it so I'd guess my next step is to get the timing checked? I'm not super experienced with ignition/timing as I once was so just looking for a better understanding of what is going on with my engine. thank you.

Definitely check your points gap and quality of facings, if you intend to re-use the points then ensure the two contact faces are clean and true, no peaks, before you check timing. If this maintenance makes a difference then it shows how often it must be adjusted or give you incentive to replace the points setup for an electronic ignition setup where you can set and forget, literally.

If I chose to go with an electronic ignition is there a kit that I should buy or do I purchase individual parts. I'm assuming these parts can be bought at my local auto parts store? Thanks.

I got told not to run Iridium plugs on a carburettored car, by my ignition specialist. And they built me an electronic distributor to my specs.....

I have PerTronix Ignitor II kit #91381A with flame thrower coil (ballast resistor eliminated) in my 1966 318 in my 1960 Plymouth. Works great, noticed an immediate improvement in how quickly the car starts, idle quality and throttle response. Installs easily in your stock distributor, you should check timing afterwards.

By the way, was this car off the road for a while? If so, you may want to go through the fuel system to make sure it's clean and that the few pieces of rubber hose are new (compatible with modern fuel). Change your fuel filter, you may want to crank the engine over with the fuel line disconnected after the fuel pump to make sure you have good fuel flow. Ran into this recently with my '60 as well, new fuel filter took care of it for me.

Nice, thanks for the info. So I don't need to purchase a whole new distributor then? I guess my next step is to rent a timing light and pull out the shop manual. it can't be that hard right? I know that I'll get into it and will need some help for sure. I travel for work so the Fury only really gets driven on the weekends but it's not been stored longer than that. Thanks for posting!

NGK plugs have the screw on plug wire terminal contacts. For whatever reason these (even when tightened as much as possible) have the tendency to unscrew during operation. Happened to me years ago and spoiled a cruising night and just a few days ago again, even tough I tightened them with locktite(!) back then. The first time, believe it or not, the unscrewing action pushed the spark plug wire boot off the plug and these are VERY hard to remove by hand.
Check these and buy a timing light, to check if all cylinders are getting spark.

No need for electronic ignition. Loose distributor ? Is your cap loose ? Check timing. Check point gap. Be sure all eight plugs are firing. No need for fancy plugs.

But the real way to diagnose the problem is with a vacuum gauge. It is the BEST tool for determing the cause of these types of problems and the health of your engine in general. Never used one ? Time to educate yourself. Lots of information out there. Stop throwing parts at it. This is a simple engine to work on. Don't depend on a mechanic either. Most don't have a clue about your car and will just drain your wallet while they scratch their head. It's your car. You need to become an expert at it.

So, here is the latest news and boy do I feel silly. I thought that it was a possibility that I was not running on all cylinders as that's kinda what it felt like. I checked all connections this morning and low and behold I found a loose connection on the distributor cap. Once it was secured the car starts up perfect and idles perfectly as if nothing was ever wrong with the car in the first place. Probably didn't need to buy the NGK's but it's running sweet now so I don't mind all that much. Thank you everyone for the advice and I'm sure at some point I will need to check/adjust the timing and will be back to this thread when I'm ready. Thanks again.

As for plugs I use good ol Champions. They work just fine in my 354.

problem fixed. Turned out to be loose wire on distributor cap.
