are there variations in length (straight portion) of the tail end of the name plate moldings? I thought I've seen a drilled hole on the end of some and no holes on others.

.
In 1959, the Custom Royals were designated MD3-H CUSTOM ROYAL.

The cap for the Custom Royal 4dr Sedan and hardtops was PN 1909 294-5 (4 = Right, 5 = Left)

The cap for the Custom Royal 2 dr hardtops and convertibles was PN 1909 394-5 (4 = Right, 5 = Left)

The four door Custom Royal wagon caps were PN 1960 616-7 (6 = Right, 7 = left)

So they were different. I would guess that the 394/5 caps were longer than the 4 dr 294/5 caps. Not going to guess on the wagons.

I use the pdf versions of the 55-58 Mopar Parts Catalog and the 59 Mopar Parts Catalog available for download at Mymopar.com.

For the side trim, you need to find the section in the Body section (23 in this case) so you can see the diagrams where they call out the side trim.

See below.

You are the "Man" ! I seen that section in my book .. just didn't click lol. Sooooooo... the difference between md3-m royal and a md3-h custom royal would be the name plate . Both should have the same overall size of molding.

I've been looking at the lengths of the name plate moldings on 2dr hard tops , I think the 4 doors have the longer plate molding. just trying to see which molding will fit the 59 cr 4 door hard tops . looks like 2 doors will not fit 4 doors because of length differences.

<p>another thing I am noticing is the "royal/ custom royal " gold name letters. there appears to be holes drilled in the molding for attachment purposes. . so they are both specific to the car . Go mopar</p><p>see first picture .</p>

Hmm...I was going to guess that the 4dr (sedan and hardtop) caps are shorter and the 2 dr hardtop caps are longer (??)

I am guessing that the 1959 Royal and Custom Royal caps start off as the same ribbed casting and then they are drilled for either the "Royal" script or the "Custom Royal Script" to create two different part numbers (plus the left and right versions). The Coronet caps are smooth and not much more.

what I am finding out is the royal and CR name plates are all the same in length and design as you mentioned . only difference was in adding the word badges and drilling the holes in different locations.
I counted the ribbing slots on the cr plates on 2 and 4 door models . both were the same .

Be patient with me here, I am trying to track down 1959 Dodge info using my familiarity with 1956 Dodge info (not sure where it will end up):

I was going to ask whether the "Royal" on the Royal was the same length on the 59 Custom Royal. Supposedly (I was told but now I didn't believe it), the "Royal" on a 56 Dodge Royal was larger than the "Royal" on a 56 Dodge Custom Royal. But I just checked section 12-15-21 NAME PLATE (side badges) in the 55-58 Catalog and it looked like there was only one "Royal" badge PN in 1956 : 1646 488 ("Custom" was 1646 764) .

*BUT* then I checked Section 23-34-238 NAME PLATES in the 55-58 Catalog and there were two "Royal" name plates after all:

1956 4 D., D63-2 "Royal" = 1645 990

and

1956 Sp. 4 D., Sp.Cl.Cp., D63-2 (Royals) UP TO Approximate Serial No. 34988904 "Royal" = 1646 488 (Hello?)

BUT 1956 Sp. 4 D . , Sp.Cl.Cp., D63-2 (Royals) AFTER Approximate Serial No. 34988904 "Royal" = 1645 990 (We're back)

And finally, 1956 4 D., Sp. 4 D., Sp. Cl. Cp., Cv. Cp., D63-3 (Custom Royals) Royal = 1646 488 (Hello again?)

So with that exercise completed and knowing that there were two different "Royal" PNs in 1956, I tried the same process in the 1959 Catalog

First I tried to find "Royal" (and "Custom") in Section 12-15-21 NAME PLATE (Side badges) of the 59 catalog:

NO "Custom", NO "Royal" just:

Coronet, MD2-L
Texan, MTJ2
FireSweep, MSI
FireDome, MS2
FireFlite, MS3
Adventurer, MS3
Adventurer, Powered, MS3 . .
New Yorker, MC3
LeBaron, MYl
And the IMPERIAL letters.

The I tried 23-34-238 NAME PLATES in the 1959 Catalog. Nada. Not even a sniff. I might be doing something wrong *OR* because the "Custom" and "Royal" were gold plated, they were only available pre-mounted on the ribbed caps. Somebody (Serge ?) must know 59 Dodges enough to point me in the correct direction. (Sorry, I failed. I thought that I would win)

Here is a Royal 1909 393.The one by the box is 1909 392

Thanks. That clears up the "lost" PN for the Royal (and Custom Royal) scripts. There weren't separate PNs. You apparently had to buy the complete cap to get the scripts.

The 1909 392 (Right) and 1909 393 (Left) makes sense for an MD3-M "Royal"
