I’ve noticed that on 1960 Dodge Darts some of the glove compartment door emblems will say “Phoenix”, “pioneer”,etc and then some others will say “Phoenix dart”, “pioneer dart” etc. I’m assuming the emblems with only the model “phoenix“,”pioneer”,”Seneca” were earlier production models and Chrysler later changed the emblems to have “dart” in small letters underneath added to the emblems. Does anyone know when in the model year this change occurred? Im assuming this was done to promote the fact these were dodge darts and there were no “dart” emblems anywhere?

Not certain on the details regarding the why and when the different glovebox emblems were changed on 1960 Dodge models. First here's the list of the glovebox emblem part numbers from the 1960 master parts catalog - See Attached file.

Also need to confirm whether or not the part number was changed depending on whether the emblem was plain or also had the "Dart" name.

It would take some research to determine a possible timeline by documenting as many cars as possible comparing the "SO" shipping order date (on the fender tag) to the style of glovebox emblem installed.

Would have to check other 1960 Dodges that I've owned but here are two that can confirm:

1960 Seneca SO # 1030 (Oct 30, 1959) glovebox emblem "Seneca" only
1960 Seneca SO # 0212 (Feb 12, 1960) glovebox emblem "Seneca" w/ Dart

If enough cars are documented then maybe a pattern emerges that the switch occurred late in 1959 or sometime in January.

there was only 8 , 60 darts that left the factory with dart emblem no matter what the parts book says . just like the D-A-R-T letters (.45$ per) that are in the parts book but never made . the is a published article that tells the story but
i'd have to dig for a week to find . the mag has a red dart on the cover ----------------------------------------later

Thanks guys for the info,I was beginning to think nobody would reply. This is just something I’ve wondered about for a long time. Logically I assumed “plain” emblems without the “dart” name would have come first, and later Chrysler probably assumed since there wasn’t anything on the car specifically calling it a “dart”,that they should add something somewhere.

Thanks for all the information. I bet your right and the change over came sometime after 1959. What’s the date code for 1959 on the data tag?

Are you talking about the same thing? I was referring to the oval shaped glove compartment door emblem. I’ve seen several cars that had emblems saying “Phoenix, dart”. “Seneca dart”,and others that simply said “Phoenix”
Are you meaning there was a body emblem listed in the parts guide that said “Dart”? Please post a photo, that would be interesting to see. Where did it attach to?

Oh wow! Thanks for the link “1960 Fury”! That’s neat. So they flirted with having the name “dart” on the quarters where we instead got Phoenix, pioneer or Seneca! Interesting.

Interesting. So they would all have been very late production Darts then.

I've just found photos from my archives of four with "DART" on the glove box emblem, (one is Canadian production with Plymouth dash) and one without the "DART" letters.

So if only 8 cars are documented as having the later version of the glove compartment emblem that would seem to indicate that only very late production vehicles must have got them, which raises the question as to why Chrysler would even bother producing a revised set of emblems that late into the game if only 8 cars would get them and they weren’t going to use the same glove compartment emblems in 1961

For Reference here are the pages from the 1960 Dodge Collision Manual that show the D-A-R-T letters on the rear quarter and corresponding part numbers

The letters are listed in Section 23-34-238

Is it just a reflection,or does it appear there was a piece of stainless trim on the deck lid on the raised line? I’m assuming it’s just the light since I don’t see an arrow pointing to the piece.
