hi all, im about to put a pertronix ignitor II system in my 270 hemi. in the instructions it says "do not use with solid core wires" what is the reasoning behind this? I have a new set of wires and they are solid core. really do not want to buy an other set if I really don't have to. any input would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Tony

It's because the Pertronix module can't handle that low of a resistance value. The carbon wires are higher resistance and limit the current that the module has to supply. Put in solid core, and the module will overheat & possibly die due to the current drain. I've run original 1955 solid core wires on my 331 hemi motor with the GM HEI module for many years and never had issues with it, by the way.

You guys are freaking me out. After lunch, I went out to start my Pertronix-equipped D500 hemi and drive to a plumbing supply store and it would NOT start. Lots of cranking and some firing but no start.

So I took another car (my 94 Audi V8 S4 avant).

When I got home, I opened the hood of the 56 Dodge, removed the aircleaner and forced the choke plate open with a screwdriver down the carb. After a few cranks, the engine started.

Apparently on the first attempt, I had tapped the throttle to set the choke but in doing so I had also flooded the engine.

I have been happy with the Pertronix - starts right up, every try - EXCEPT today after reading this thread.
