As far as I know those reaction shafts were all 27 spline. However, if yours was 28 spline you might be in for a world of hurt because even finding a 27 spline reaction shaft is not easy.

The reaction shaft in the very earliest 56 Chryser Torqueflites must have had an issue (design fault?) because in the 55-58 Mopar Parts Catalogue the 56-57 Chrysler reaction shaft is listed as being superceded to 1843422, i.e. a 1958 part. Nothing about the number of splines.

The next reaction shafts are listed specifically as being 27 spline (which does play to 1843422 not being 27 spline), as 1738247, 1823869 and 1853594.

I tried all four numbers (one at a time) at Hiltop Mopar's website and got zero hits. Then I tried all four numbers at Len Dawson's Deception Pass Mopar and got a hit on 1738247:

http://www.dpmotorparts.com/inventory_4_a.cfm

Loc Quanity Part # Description Application Price
S-4 1 1738247 AUTOM 3 SPD REACTION SHAFT, 27 SPLINES, 7-5/8” 57 TO TRANS #438860 EX SOME DS $160

I got a hit on 1853594 at AutoTran http://www.autotran.us/tfkits1.html

with this: "Reaction Shaft, 1958-61 (Q2 - TX-24, aluminum) (I sold all of my steel ones) 1853594 TX-24 2818G $85.00"

I just got off the phone with my NOS Mopar parts guy and gave him all four part numbers, hoping that he might have a 1843422 (the maybe 28 spline version?). He's picking parts for another customer but will get back to me.

Mike: Well actually 27 is good news. 28 would be bad news. NO idea why they kept superseding to new part numbers. Presumably there were improvements.

At least you have a couple of sources of 27 spline shafts. The one from Len Dawson is probably NOS steel whereas the one from AutoTrans is obviously going to be aluminum.

I've private mailed you here with a request for information on how you handled the TF rear cross member in your 56 Plymouth PF to TF conversion. Hope you have the time to reply.

My '56 Imperial was a factory TF car, so one of the earliest TF transmissions and it was original to the car. It had and aluminum reaction shaft on it, but the trans was so rotten inside that most of the inners are from a '58 TF. That trans had the steel reaction shaft on it so that's what I used. Maybe the 392 and 413 engines make too much torque for the aluminum?

I got a hit on 1853594 at AutoTran http://www.autotran.us/tfkits1.html
with this: "Reaction Shaft, 1958-61 (Q2 - TX-24, aluminum) (I sold all of my steel ones) 1853594 TX-24 2818G $85.00"

I emailed Autotran with a question about their reaction shaft and they replied this AM:

"Dave, I talked to the Torqueflite specialist around here and he says you need the aluminum one for a 1956 trans. This means mine is not P/N 1853597 but P/N 2240223. It is not as strong as an iron one but it's what you have to use. I can send pictures if req'd plus any dimensions needed. It does have 27 splines like they all should have so have him recount till he comes up with 27."

So actually, I am confused about that answer other than 56 = Aluminum.

Like I said, I swapped the '58 steel reaction shaft into my trans when I rebuilt it. As far as I could tell, they were the same in every way other than material.
