One of those things I don't need often or think about until I do need it but it just barely makes enough light to see that I am inside the car.
The lens is fine and the bulb works well, just not much light. Is there a brighter upgrade that doesn't get too hot?

You can search for BAY15D Led bulbs - for some strange reason some of them has two plus poles and the minus in the lamp base. I had to open and connect my "yellow" lamps correctly.

BA15 = Bayonet base, 15 mm wide.

There are several variations of BA15, e.g. BA15S (single contact, parallel side pins), BA15D (double contact, parallel side pins), BA15D(1157) (double contact, off-set side pins)

The dome light in my 56 Dodge (for example) is a 1004, which is a single filament but two (2) contact, parallel side pin, 15 mm diameter base bulb. So the equivalent LED is, as Sven (wizard) suggested, a BA15D:

Watch out, the LEDs come in warm white and WHITE 6000K WHITE!!
