I'm cleaning up the power steering pump to put into my '58 Plymouth and am wondering how they were finished from the factory.

I was always under the impression they were black until I saw a couple of NOS pumps on ebay which appear to have raw steel for the brackets, raw cast for the pump body, and a coating similar to galvanized, but it's not, on the tank.

Does anyone know if they were painted on production cars but the replacements were unfinished? Any low-mileage survivors out there that haven't been touched to verify one way or the other?

Following are some photos of the NOS pumps, one for '58 Plymouth and one for '58 Chrysler.

Thanks for posting the photo Matt.

I'm just embedding it in the message so it's quicker to view.

I'm wondering if the colors were consistent across all of the pump types (I think there were 3 or 4 different suppliers depending on application), but the pump in this photo appears to be the sleeve type based on the "bottlecap" crimped fill cap and both lines going to and from the cast body. The second photo from the '57-'58 Plymouth service manual for that pump also shows what appears to be silver or unfinished casting and brackets with a black reservoir.

So I'm still looking for some solid evidence on the color scheme for the slipper type pump with the return line going into the reservoir.

Thanks again for posting the photo Matt.

I see know what style you have, now that I look at it, my 58 Plymouth (318) has the same style as the first one you posted above.
