Hey kids how everyone doing? Ok my '56 Imperial and it's lil 354 Firepower hemi no goie vroom. Fuel is getting to the pump, yuck. No goodies to carb. If the valve plate is bad, let alone getting gaskets anyone know of anywhere that might have a rebuild kit for this thing?
They used to 2 pumps back then and the FSM is goofy describing it. Could it be just to take the sediment bowl off and clean it out? And this thing is a bear cat to get to, with the A/C compressor and the idler, along with the shroud and the heat blower.

Any idea or help would be more than mucho grande appreciadoed.

Then and Now has kits:

https://www.then-now-auto.com/fuel-pumps/

The 55-58 Parts catalogue lists two pumps for the 354: 1637 367 and 1692 790 depending on your early/late engine number.

eBay shows two of the earlier 1637 367 pumps:

And one of the later pumps:

Yep there are 2. The FSM shows: Two different Carter fuel pumps are used on
the Chrysler 1956 Models. Carter fuel pump
number M 961 S is used on all models from
start of production "up to" cars. A Carter fuel
pump number M 2413 S is used on all models
"after" cars.

It been several years since I had the thing off and no I did not write down which pump it has. From the FSM I can only figure the "up to and after". That being said I think mine is the after? I mean mine has the 3 speed torque flight. Thanks D you are very active on this site and very helpful sir.

Torqueflites started to go into Imperials after January 31st, 1956 but was hit and miss until VIN C56-6700 and then it was all Imperials. So your car definitely could be an "AFTER".

Your suggestion that the fuel pump is a Carter M-2413-S translates to PN 1676 292 which is neither of the numbers I found yesterday.

A Carter M-961-S translates to PN 1486 269 (which looks like a 1954 part number to me). I can't find any info on this pump.

A Carter M-2413-S (1676 292) supposedly looks like this:

Been lots of problems with reman F/Ps for many years. The old kits wern't made for Ethanol contaminated gas.. Probably best to gat an adaptor from HH & use a late model F/P.

Ok got the thing off and tad po'ed and the machine shop that did my engine is now retired and the shop no is no longer in existence. With the A/C this thing is a 1 handed contorted real pain in bahoochie to get off. Turns out it is an Airtex pump. Found that by the gaskets inside. Went to Airtex web site and '56 Chrysler nada. But '56 Dodge. At any rate this pump shows to be for a 5.4L and the 354 is a 5.7L but they did not use liters for engines back then. So I called Airtex to see of pump will work for my 354 Hemi. They said nope. I guess there was some legal wrangling back then between Carter and Airtex, what ever.

My pump and the one that shows the matching fuel line hook ups is that later pump in the FSM. Which match outside to the T of what the Airtex looks like.
My pump sits rite on top of almost the cross member. No sediment bowl there, just the carbs. So I got a hold Then and Now, great folks, and talked this over with them. Tom, then and now, told me to hang on after I told him what Airtex told me, he then stated he found the pump is good for my engine.
I did some searching and found someone makes an adapter plate to use a pump for a 318. With that I have no idea how on earth the bottom of the pump would fit in this tiny space.

So to make a longer story short I ordered the rebuild kit from Then and Now. I mean heck the pump has been working since '96. Did some other hunting and found the actuater arm that hooks to the diaphragm is actually a better design than the one that the arm makes direct contact with the diaphragm. So much for stock now. Also I am now putting in a fuel filter before the pump. Found just a couple of grains of in the bottom of the pump, probably broke down gasket material, that I don't want in the carb or engine.

D I thank you for finding the pumps on Ebay. I am bit skeptical about finding something that might be some 60 or so years old and having good rubber inside. Oh well now with the pump off I can put on a better T-block for the fuel fitting going to the heater pump.

Hot Heads (Hothemiheads.com) makes the adaptor. I used it to put an LA F/P om my 331. Works fine.
