I recently purchased this car and was told it needed a parking brake cable. On this car it is actually a parking gear cable as it goes to the transmission and locks it up. There is a parking brake pedal assembly in the car that works like a parking brake-when depressed it tightens the cable. The only thing is that when tightened the transmission is NOT locked up. When the cable is pushed back into the housing is when the transmission locks up. There is no actual parking brake at all and doesn't look like there ever was one. There is no drum on the driveshaft behind the tranny, and no cable system to the rear wheels-also doesn't look like there ever was. The cable is broken at the top where it hooks into the pedal assembly. It looks like it was meant for a 5/19 bolt that adjusts. Did these work in reverse-pedal down to drive, pedal released to lock up the transmission? I think I can have a new cable made but as near as I can tell it would operate in reverse order-pedal depressed to drive. I have worked on a lot of older cars-I have a 56 Coronet (parking brake is a drum behind tranny), but I have never seen anything like this. All/any help greatly appreciated! Thanks, Tracy In Omaha.

Someone has installed a later 727 or 904 transmission into your '60.

You could use the parking brake pedal to activate the Park mechanism but you would have to attach the cable below the pedal pivot instead of above the pivot and limit the pedal travel so as not to kink the cable core.

That explains a lot. I have a 56 Coronet with push buttons and it has a drum on the end of the tranny.
I saw on the actual tech forum that someone had made a box for their parking gear cable and it looked pretty good. The only thing I am missing is the lever assembly like he used in his home made box-which came out great! There is a salvage yard a couple of hours away that I am going to for parts for my 65 Plymouth. They have acres and acres of cars. When I called for the parts for the Plymouth it took several days for them to check and see if they had one-turns out they have several with the parts I need. I may try to get down there in the next week or so and see if they have something I could use for the lever set up. When those are integrated with the push button setup do they separate or are they a solid unit? Thanks for the quick response. Tracy in Omaha.

The box you saw was probably mine, the park mechanism is separate from the shifter. Just about any '62-'64 Mopar will be a donor.

That was the box I saw.. Thanks for the info. I am going to see if I can find one. I found several custom cable makers online. Orschelin in Missouri, and Control Cables Inc in California. Have you ever worked with either of these guys, or do you know someone else? I have the end that goes into the tranny. It is intact. The end that would have to go to the pedal assembly would need a 5/16 adjusting bolt. I like the way you did yours using a clevis and pin. I think they could make one using my tranny end and the clevis setup like you have.

I am hoping to get lucky and find a 62-64 parking gear assembly with cable intact. Then I would be able to use the cable that came with the assembly

The cable I used is an unaltered factory cable, the end has a 3/16" hole. As I stated earlier, if using the factory parking brake pedal, you wouldn't want to attach the cable at the original position; this would pull the cable and you want to push the cable to engage Park. You would need to attach the cable below the pivot (circled in yellow below) to push the cable core and limit the travel.

I just bought a cable on ebay that should work. It has the original clevis end at the top. I should be able to set it up below the pivot point to work correctly when the pedal is depressed.

If the cable lock bolt head is broken, maybe my solution would help.
