what are others thoughts on the electric choke upgrade? i have the original system that comes off the exhaust manifold, but is suspect because of questionable connections. Have others upgraded to the electric choke? When i watched the video on it, it looks like it wires to a ballast resistor...i had a ballast resistor on my 72 Cuda but not sure if 1 exists on my 57 New Yorker...thoughts?
thanks,
billy

Restore the factory system, as it "monitors" the actual temperature of the intake manifold. Even if its not much, the e-choke constantly draws current and it is just another electrical item to go bad. I'm such a fan of the divorced OE choke, that I even converted the E-choke of the aftermarket Holley carburetor I'm running to the divorced choke system. Works without problems.

My car came to me already equipped with an Echlin electric choke comprised of an electrical relay, the choke activation element (a plate with an electrically heated bi-metal spring) and the wiring, as shown below. As Sid suggests, it is on as long as the ignition key is in the RUN position (IGN on the switch). I haven't had a problem with it. I doubt that it is sucking very many amps.

They are available from NAPA: https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/CRB21663

That said, if I had the OE components (which I do not), like the heat tube, the insulation, the mechanically heated choke disc, I would be just as happy or maybe even happier. I would make my 56 Dodge look like this 1955 Dodge, choke-wise:

But for me to go Sid's OE way, I would have to find the hot-air cover, the air tube and the insulation. I can find the cover on eBay. Probably have to make the hot air tube.

What Sid wrote...
Electric choke is absolutely not an upgrade, more of a downgrade

That said, yes there is a ballast resistor on the firewall up on the left side. Connect it to the 12 volt side.

Make sure that your heat riser isn't rusted/seized in the wrong position.

Dave, your 315 should use an intake manifold choke, not the exhaust heat version, no? All my 325 motors use the later type intake choke.

Billy, yes, the electric choke works if you can't use an original. The main problem with them that I have had is if you shut your hot car off, and come back after 15min, your engine is still hot, but your electric choke is now cold. So when you go to crank it, the motor will likely flood out on you because it has the wrong choke setting. To get around it, you have to know ahead of time what it is likely to do, and give it full throttle when you start it to prevent that from happening.

Nope. They didn't change to the Timmy-down-the-well style until 1957. The 56s (hemi and poly) follow the 55 style (which maybe goes back to 1953, Dodge's first V8s??)

First a photo of a 57/58 4bbl intake showing Timmy-down-the-well and then mine (when I was investigating air cleaner options):

Hey, that 1st picture is my motor! Thanks. I didn't realize there were two different castings for the 315-325 4bbl intake.

Sorry. I didn't label the photo when I saved it as yours. Hope that using it was okay.

I just realized that there probably wasn't a 4 bbl 241 manifold in 1953. There was in 1954 but it was made my Offenhauser for the Pace Cars (and clones). Never the less , you can just see the heat tube in this 54 Pace Car engine photo.

Rather than electric - why not convert it to a manual choke? I did that with my factory 4 bbl and am very happy wit it.
