If anyone is familiar with this publication, please advise of your feeling as to it’s accuracy.

Their ratings are basically #1 through #5 (not counting junkers) with 1 being the best as being about perfect.
The spread is quite large as I am only interested a #3, #2, or #1 regarding a ‘60 DeSoto 2HT. The range is
$29K for a #3 to $63K for a #1. Not much difference between a Fireflite or Adventurer which is kind of
surprising to me.

Thanks!

For comparison, the most recent issue of Cars Report Price Guide shows a #3 Fireflite 2-dr HT at $22,950 and the Adventurer 2-dr HT at $23,850. #1 condition is $51K and #53K respectively.

Thanks 57chilzer.

I’m seriously considering one of these cars. One is a #3 and the other is a #1. I guess it’s up me if I think the #1
is worth the difference. About $100 worth of work on #1 but plenty of interior work (basically a total re-do of the seats) on #3
which is not only material cost and labor but time is of the essence too.

You can search message boards, ebay and auction results and triangulate a value for most things these days. Guides are mostly worthless at this point.

Thanks guys and I’ve already done that. However because of the lack of popularity of the ‘60 DeSoto (and ‘61) there is very limited
information. What I did find was in the range of $30K for what I would call a #3 to $45k with none being a #1 car.

Basically I guess it’s up to me to decide where I want to go.

Thanks again for your input.

Fred - I would imagine your expections are set pretty high after having that beautiful '59.  Sometimes timing is a big factor too, I mean like what's available for sale during the time you're in the market for one.  So you make a decision based on what's available and then BOOM a few months later one pops up exactly like what you wanted.  Hope that doesn't happen to you.  I know you're very methodical and you've got vast resources, so I wish you the best in your search.

I've referred to collectorcarmarket many times over the last 15 or so years. IMO, the accuracy is pretty good, within a 10% margin, not only on the Mopars but other makes as well. The prices don't fluctuate wildly year to year but remain steady and make adjustments about once a year.

As far as 1960 DeSoto prices, the Fireflite seems to be spot on or slightly high and Adventurers spot on or slightly low. A good overall stance. There are not many 60 or 61 #1 cars that trade on the open market. I'd put mine as a #1 and have it insured at $50K with Hagerty, which bought out my original insurance company. My old company wouldn't insure at $60k because there were no transactions they could find to justify it. They said if I would make a statement that the car was only trailered they would do it. I should've signed up for that because it's ended up being a trailer queen, which was not my original intent.

When I bought mine as a derelict project, the market had several #3 cars and a couple of #2's available. Priced around $22-28,000 in 2011. The pictures showed pretty paint, nice interiors and so-so or really bad engine bays and chassis. Who knows what was hiding under the shiny. And without seeing in person or hiring a professional to inspect it, there was no telling what I would get. That's when I decided to buy a project and build it back from the ground up. I couldn't justify spending the money and most likely having to tear it all down after paying up for something I thought was nice. I did try buying a blue 1960 New Yorker that was for sale in New Jersey but the owner had me mixed up with someone else with the same last name and refused to budge on his price. Looking back, I should've bought it as it was very original and appeared solid.

I've had a couple guys interested in mine but it's not for sale. $63K or even $70K wouldn't be enough to make me even think about it, especially after investing 6 years into the search and restoration of a car that I'd been seeking for over 20 years. Good luck with the search. I did place a bunch of wanted ads around the internet and a rather eccentric former member here sold me the car... and a year later he vanished. I've tried to message him many times to show the final result with no luck.

Now that I know you're interested I'll let you know if I find anything on the internet that might interest you.

Thanks Greg for your input. I sincerely appreciate any assistance in finding my dream car.

I did find a couple I am very interested in and if things go right and nothing else comes along,
there is a good possibility I will end up with one of these.

Thanks again for your input and assistance.

Well, Fred, now that you've made your move, what do you think of collectorcar.com's accuracy?  Inquiring minds want to know.

I, like others, believe it to be just a guide. And as far as the actual prices are concerned regarding ads, posts, etc. involving '60 DeSoto 2 HTs that I found or others have found and forwarded to me - they are all over the map but in the range that the collectorcarmarket.com indicates them to be. I also did some random checking on other more popular cars and found it to be fairly close in their values. As I understand it, they do major updates only once a year and with the car prices being so erratic these days, it's a crap shoot to a degree.

I realize I had to step up to the plate in order to get any of the ones that I would be satisfied with.
