I have heard of Ammeter Gauge failure causing the car not to run. This 
has never happened to me, but I don't think it would be an intermittent 
problem. Is this problem still intermittent, or has the car finally 
quit running altogether? There should be a way to bypass that gauge to 
determine if it really is your problem. Replacing the gauge isn't going 
to hurt anything, but I don't think it would be my next step.

Intermittent ignition problems are nearly always due to loose/dirty 
connections, or corroded wires.
