Keep looking, and follow those wires from the amp meter. It is possible
that the problem is restricted to them. The ammeters have been know to
short out. Overheating wires can also be caused by a loose or corroded
connection. The heat can be enough to cause the insulation to melt.
Once the ammeter has become open, the car won't run.
I hope your wiring is otherwise okay. It will be a great time and money
saver if that is all that was damaged. The ammeter will jump around due
to high resistance in the circuit, a bad voltage regulator, or a short
going through a circuit breaker.

I checked under the hood really good and could not find any burnt wires
at all. I noticed before all this happened my amp meter was jumping all
over the place. The two wires coming off the amp meter seem to be burnt
the worse. I have the dash taken apart. I'm splitting open all the
taped wires looking for any burnt ones. It seems to have started inside
the car. Another question. For five years now I have been trying to
figure out where the light source plugs into the push button heater
controls. That's the only area that doesn't light up. For the life of
me I just don't see how a light source attaches to those clear push
buttons

I think you experienced a short circuit. Check under the hood. I
believe that you will find more burned wires. The voltage regular
wouldn't have likely been the cause. There are several other areas to
look, both under the dash and under the hood. The wiring diagrams are
very good. When you have time, you can trace through them and determine
what went bad, then replace the wiring. The instrument cluster is easy
to remove. You may find something there, but I suspect there will be
lots of burned wires to and from the source of the trouble. If you have
done any recent work, that might be a good place to start. I hope this
helps. Nearly all the accessories are fuse protected. I would guess it
is within the main power circuit.

and my car filled with smoke. I noticed that both wires going to my amp
meter and one wire to my ignition. burned up . what could have cause
this to happen ?? any place I should look first I was thinking maybe it
was the voltage regulator any clues thanks
