novice sheet metal cut & paste

Hello!
    Is it a bad idea for a novice with the right
cutting and measuring tools to try removing sheet
metal from one '57 and welding it on to another '57? 
By novice of course I mean me, having  never used a
welding torch.  By sheet metal I mean the trunk floors
and whatever fenders or rocker panels turn out to be
rotted once I strip them.  Is there a book that would
cover this kind of restoration sculpturing for
amatures?
