66 engine cutting out at highway speeds

Just a quick question. Didn't 66s have a fuel filter in the gas tank commonly 
called a sock at the pickup end of the fuel line? The new fuel pump, I bet, 
is collapsing the filter by the sucking action of the pump -- causing a 
running out of gas syndrome.
