RE: IML: Catalytic converters

My dad’s ’74 360 Gran Fury had a cat.  It was the first year for them.  The car smelled like rotten fish.  Passenger cars had to have them I believe starting in ’74, but I don’t know if it was all models.  That might be another reason E-bodies died early into the ’74 model year.  I’d have to do some research on that one.  The ’75 Dart parts car I have has the original cat still under it.  The ’83 Mirada I had used two pre-cats right after the manifolds, then went to a y-pipe to a single cat.  I guess the ’81-83 Imperials used the same system.

Light trucks didn’t need cats until ’79.  The ’78 Little Red Express did not have cats (one of the reasons for making the truck was the relaxed emissions requirements) but the ‘79’s did.

Interesting!~

I owned a 76 Dodge maxivan (ok-I used it to go to Imperial meets!) which did NOT have a cat converter. I bought it used that way. First time I went for inspection the mechanic said it couldn't be passed because it lacked a converter. He said all vehicles from 1975 had to have them-

I found another mechanic who didn't look underneath., as I couldn't convince the first guy the van didn't have one when made. -Is it possible this is one of the vehicles that was factory free of a converter?
