Re: IML: Window motors and switches...

Lets be careful out there, and if at all possible..get the right wiring diagram for the car. Im gonna go out a little bit on the limb here and add a couple somewhat general statements on these window motor circuits.

Generally they tap into the power for them at the left side kickpanel and have some heavy rated circuit breakers at that point. From there the power is routed to the master window switch and to the individual window switches and lastly to the motors. I have always seen window motors grounded thru their mounting hardware or by a separate ground lug to the frame. Most of the time the two insulated wires going to the motor are both 12v to the motor, one for up and the other for down. Often inside the motor is a small set of contact points where the brushes are at, to open in case of overheating much like a circuit breaker does in electrical short circuits.

Most of the time in automotive circuitry, with the exception of dome and courtesy lights, power is what is switched on and off not ground. Switching the ground on and off would work, but you are at the risk then of having a 12v potential at the motor at all times and the possibility of a short or even larger meltdown should a circuit breaker not open.

If the motor works in one direction and not the other, check the leads at the motor and see if they are both receiving power in each position of the switch, one should be energized in up and the other wire would be energized in down. A simple test light will do fine for this. If the current is being sent from the switch to the motor thru the respective wires properly, then the next place to check is in the motor itself.

Hope this helps a bit
