I agree with the earlier comments regarding EFI Imperials. The entire
Hydraulic Support Plate is not defective. It is probably the power module
but could also be the pump (I have never seen one go bad), or the fuel metering
module. These tend to be quite reliable as well. It is necessary to
go through the diagnostic procedures to identify whether it is in the HSP at
all. There are a number of items that can go bad.
I have an 81 with the factory EFI system intact and working very
well. I have had problems on two or three ocassions but have been able to
repair it with used parts and a lot of persistence. My experience is that
if it is an EFI component it is probably the computer that is mounted on the
left (drivers) side of the air cleaner or the power module inside the air
cleaner and part of the Hydraulic Support Plate. You need to go through
the diagnostic process to first determine if it is a fuel problem (you can pour
fuel in the air cleaner to determine this) or an spark problem. Check for
high voltage spark at the plugs. There are several persons on this list
who can walk you through this process better than I. I am willing to share
the knowledge I have.
My advice is to learn as much as you can about the system and try to repair
it. Do not convert it to a carburetor system. These cars with EFI
work and work very well when they are right. A good carbureted system
doesn't come close to comparing to a good EFI system.
