The point of my IML post was to display the ignorance of anyone who would dismiss an entire industry (Or manufacturing base? region? city? citizens? Who can tell with your broad-based stereotypes?) Not only would it be stupid to use a minor, regionally popular option to base such a comment, but you don't even have your facts straight! Lemme guess, "Detroit" bought-up all the streetcars, put Preston Tucker out of business, and killed the guy who invented a 200 MPG carburetor too huh? Your kind used to be funny, but sadly your sensationalized claims are often taken as fact by the ignorant masses. I have no doubt you're older than me, I meet ex-hippies all the time who don't know S-H-I-T about engineering, economics or history. They're all angry at "the man", but refuse to do the hard science necessary to make an argument that amounts to anything more than their own prejudice. Hypocrites. This is an industry, made up of separate companies, all with their own good ideas, AND problems. We've all had high and low times. I can think of good Japanese manufactures (Toyota) and bad Japanese manufactures (Mitsubishi). I can name several "domestic" products which out rank foreign products in quality surveys, and the reverse is also true. I try to NEVER speak in broad terms (Japanese, American, German, etc.) with regard to the industry. Unlike you, I can enjoy cars from every time period and manufacturer because I SEE THEM IN THE CONTEXT OF THEIR ERA. I like my '61 because it's "space-age", my '73 because it's over-the-top baroque, my '81 because it was state-of-the-art, and even my '93 5th Ave because it's given me 196,000 trouble-free miles at 20 MPG. Good Lord man... Sorry to tell you I only read the first and last paragraphs of this boring rant, I hardly need you to "school" me on Chrysler's history in the 70s/80s. I'd love to here your theories on "why" we are so backwards in Detroit, as I have a feeling this would explain what kind of person you really are. --- "Wm. R.
