I have just finished my '58 steering wheel. First I thoroughly cleaned it with fantastic and water to remove all the dirt from the cracks. I then cleaned it with plastic prep cleaner from the local body shop supply store. I then wrapped it in masking tape and injected all the cracks with marine epoxy (very thin consistency compared to the household stuff in a tube) using a drug store type syringe to restore the structural integrity of the plastic. Once cured I removed the tape and touched up low spots with a finishing body filler. A couple of coats of high build primer from a spray can, a careful sanding to get it perfect and then shot it with touchup spray, duplicolor. Did basically the same with my '38 wheel 7 years ago and still no cracks.

thanks for the help. I have tryed to dye a steering wheel that was on an old pickup with
vinal dye, but it would come off on my hands when I drove the truck.
is there a product that is made for recoloring a steering wheel?
I was going to try that plastic dip that you use to cover plier
handles, but the local stores here no longer carry it . has anyone tried
this product on steering wheels?
