Re: IML: An Imperial By Any Other Name

There were other "Imperials" also. I have seen a 1946 Cadillac Imperial. It was a long wheel base model with a dividing glass that could be raised between the driver and the passengers. I think the term Imperial denotes this type of vehicle by any manufacturer, hence the Humber. I would dare to guess the term is of British origin. In the UK they was a type of vehicle specifically made for civic dignitaries and it was a badge of honor for each community's mayor or whatever bigwig to have access to it. In this, of course, the Soviet Union, followed suit, but that's another story for a whole nuther mailing list. The more egalitarian USA made do with stretch versions of regular cars. I am not aware of a specific make that was restricted to the so called elite.

Actually, this is a Humber 'Imperial', and there is an Imperial connection.

Humber, Sunbeam, Singer, Hillman, and Commer commercial vehicles made up
the Rootes Group which was consumed by Chrysler in the 60's. This made for
the awkward situation of Chrysler marketing Sunbeam Tigers, 'powered by
Ford'.

I'm not familiar with the later iterations, but prior to Chrysler's
machinations, the Imperial badge was applied to the Humber limousines,
complete with divider glass. By coincidence, there is one such being
restored in my neighbourhood.

Bill??? Anything to add?

Bob

No relation to Chrysler Corporation as far as I know, I think Kenyon was
teasing us with the most tepid of Imperial content.

I can't stand it, I can't stand it, I can't stand it,!! EVERY cool car
that
has a reasonable price is found on the West Coast. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.

Man, oh man it stinks living in Ohio.

Or maybe it just stinks having to count the quarters on my bureau instead
of
being fiscally able to buy what I see when I see it. <<sigh>. At least my
'66 Imperial Coupe will be back from the shop soon with its rebuilt
tranny,
rebuilt brake booster and all new hoses!! YEAH!!

BTW, is this car truly related to our Imperials, or is it only related in
name?
