No, I had a 47 Cadillac convertible with Hydro-electric windows, for the 
front only! And I believe that the 46 had them, too. Yes, the rear ones were 
cranks. And if you count the separator glass in a limo, I know that early 
40s cars (Cadillac among them) had them. And you probably can find examples 
in the industry that go back even further.

I hated the Hydro-electric system, at least as it was executed in 1940s 
autos. The cylinder that runs your window up and down resides in the door, 
of course.  It is powered by hydraulic fluid, and guess where all that goes 
when the (inevitable) leak occurs? Bye, bye, door panels, adjacent rug, etc.

So, I really appreciate the all electric system in my 53 Imperial. Even 
though it is touchy.

This same (hydo-electric) system type powers a 20+ ton turret in an Abrams 
tank today; i.e., electric signals are the brain to signal the hydraulic 
muscle to slew the turret. It works a lot better now.

But not perfectly. Tanks still have cranks as backups. And it takes 640 
cranks to make the turret go around once. (And people complain about having 
to crank their car window 6 times to go up)!
