I believe there is an adjustment at the transmission, someone correct me if I'm wrong, I haven't actually performed this procedure.
From the way I understand it, there is a bolt that is removed that holds the
speedometer adapter to the transmission case. I think that this is a wheel that has a number of bolt holes around it. I think it's turned one way or the other to make small adjustments to the speedometer reading. It seems that I've heard that each bolt hole indicates a 2-3mph change. The 1973 service manual shows on page 86, http://imperialclub.com/Yr/1973/FSM/Chassis/html/21-086.htm the adapter and the pinion teeth number ranges. On page 127, http://imperialclub.com/Yr/1973/FSM/Chassis/html/21-127.htm you will find the chart that shows which adapter range to use based on tire size and axle ratio. You'll have to find a means to compare the old tire size charts to the new metric sizing that is on your car now. I think that LR78-15 size was standard on Imperials for most years since 1959. As for how the adjustment works, I haven't been able to find it in the service manual either. I think that either the hold down clamp wheel is turned a number of bolt holes or the adapter is rotated a small amount in the specified range of gear teeth. I'd be interested in hearing how this is accomplished too, as my Newport reads about 8% faster than I'm going.
Eric Portland, Oregon ______________________________________________________ Does anyone know that if my speedometer is off (it works and the tripometer and odometer work) about 10-15 mph, is it just a remove and lube issue or some kind of gear issue in the speedometer itself that needs to be sent off and repaired? Couldn't find anything on it in the archives.
