RE: IML: Ignition failure II

Kenyon,

It may be my terminology that is wrong. On an electronic ignition system,
the distributor has an 8 sided (on a V8) pointy metal ring that rotates on
the distributor shaft. I found a photo of one on Ebay
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=453713319
1&category=34205

This is called a reluctor - Hey, I didn't make it up - honest :-))

When this spins in front of a small magnet type device (pickup), a small
current is generated. This small current is fed to the electronic amplifier
(orange, black or chrome box), that then sends the amplified signal through
the coil and in turn fires the spark plug. That pick-up is what I was
talking about. You can measure the resistance of the pick up and even put a
scope on it, and it will show that it is fine. But if it is faulty or aged,
after it warms up a bit, from engine heat etc. it can become erratic.

Regards
Tom

I like to think that I've been around. Have not heard
of a reluctor pickup coil before.

Can you describe/explain it to me?
