You may perhaps try a test with the rear wheels off the floor.
If ther's no "clong" in the trans when you shift from N to another position, ther's a problem with oil line pressure : no pressure in the lines (regulator valve locked ?)

But don't forget that you can have a strange cause !! I remember that a friend on his '57 could  start in R (very dangerous) and no other positions worked !!!
- The shift cable unlocked at trans just when the car rolled back and was in R (so the trans lever remains in R ..)
- The trans. safety switch was shot  so someone (some years ago)  grounded the wire rather than replaced it ...!

So perhaps your shift cable unlocked itself in N ?
