This is a possibility, however it would also probably result in "smoke" appearing from other areas from under the dash. Since this smoke would be coming from oil burning off the engine, or from blow-by fumes due to crank case ventilation problems, the smell would be identifiable. Electrical smoke smell is altogether different.

I hope that your nose is working, it will really help you figure this out.
